Does it matter? He has a legitimate question.

Anyway give this Link a peek.

I think SUNY syracuse charges about 33k-34K a year for out of state tuition(Covering Tuition,Books, Board, etc)
Northland looks promising and if you can prove that you are from a low/middle income family they will match tuition to that of the public university in your state.

Your right that at 17 your to young to even consider online education. Though as a suggestion to keep costs low. You might want to consider CLEP, DSST, Straighterline or Aleks to get subjects like your minors/general electives out of the way out of the way and apply as a 2nd-3rd year Transfer Student. Anyway it will be useful to see what courses you need to take and what is equivalent outside and then make a plan.

Now in regards to networking. I am curious are you interested in research, management, Field work, Business?

I can't speak to the other programs, but Northland College does have an EXCEPTIONAL program. Moreover, for students who qualify - Northland has a "tuition match" program:

Tuition Match - Access Guarantee | Northland College

Yes, Northland is not "big name" school, but having direct experience with them in my former job...I highly recommend that you give Northland College a look.

Sorry, I have 3 teen sons and I taught 13th graders for 18 years. Maybe I'm completely wrong. But someone that bright and articulatestumbles into a distance learning forum? How?! And then he poses a question to a pool of distance learners about NOT distance learning?
When is the last time one of your teen kids visited a forum like this to get an answer like that?

I have a sixteen year old, and I don't think it's implausible. And as for stumbling onto DI, people do it all the time. This community gets pretty good results on Google. And this is hardly the first question we've gotten not about distance learning. This is unusual, but not amazing.

That's nothing. My first post here was "can I use your bathroom?"

Whoa now! I'm flattered that you think I write well enough to be some older adult conning you all out of all of this quality information for free, but there's a much simpler explanation. My mother is an editor and my father is an author. English has been drilled into me my entire life, that's why I'm a little more articulate than my peers. Occam's razor, yo.

Digressions aside, thank you all for the quality information. I will definitely be checking out every one of the programs mentioned in the thread, and any more advice or direction will be graciously accepted.

Engineering is not my preferred rout (that's waaaaaay too much math for me), but I've not totally excluded it from my options. Hopefully, I would be able to go into business for some sort of sustainable tech company or an alternative energy manager. That is actually probably closer to my dream job, but right now it's all up in the air. I don't know the best way to get there, and I don't know where I'd need to go for it.

I have three children: one with a degree, one currently in college and one who just graduated high school. I also severed as a high school principal for 7-years. Not a big point of contention; but the OP is not a 17 year-old; no way … no how.

Liar!!! There is NO WAY he is 17 either. I need to see birth certificates. Now! Long form, or I have no choice but to assume that you are kenyan.

She's a really good author and cook, but she doesn't count very well.

13th graders = community college freshmen.

His title is self-depreciating (the hook) while his post is that of a veteran forum member. It's whatever. Occam s Razor yo.

Occam's Razor is something you're supposed to learn in philosophy class ... if you weren't sleeping in class that day.

Environmental science degrees in general are not great degrees if you are looking for a environmentally related career (water, air pollution, trash disposal, global warming, urban planning, auto industry, etc). Those sectors hire people with engineering, science degrees (biology, chemistry), and occasionally geology, economics and math degrees.

My other peice of advice is to attend community college for a year or so then transfer to a 4-year school. This should reduce the overall cost of a degree . My two sons attended CC prior to transferring to USC and UCSB.

It's something like this: "With all other things being equal, the simplest answer is usually the correct answer." William of Occam, some English guy from long ago.

Sorry, if it wasn't on a DSSt or in my Paramedic Syllabus I probably slept through it like Ted said. :)
