I need 21 hours of Upper Level arts and sciences/General ed

Anyone have any ideas on some upper level courses that are doable/not to difficult. What are my options? I only saw a few DSST's and CLEP has none correct?

 

depends on where your going to school and what your studying....we know lots of alternatives usually....but you gotta provide info to go on.

 

Well I applied at Excelsior but plan on applying at each of the big 3 eventually. So far i am looking at a liberal arts degree.

 

If I remember correctly 12 hours including science, math, humanity, and a captone course and then it was 21 hours of upper level courses. Not sure this helps. When I call they are so short in their answers I guess since I haven't officially enrolled. They just did an eval

 

It sounds like you're attending COSC or Excelsior because TESC doesn't haven't those kinds of requirements. It sounds more like Excelsior, however. COSC and EC are almost the same when it comes to which tests they'll grant UL credits for. Out of the arts and science or liberal arts DSSTs:

Money and Banking is difficult.
Substance abuse is considered doable for most.
Civil War and Reconstruction requires a lot of study.
Rise and Fall of the Soviet Union requires a lot of study.
Business Ethics and Society is doable.

For these DSSTs, Excelsior will give UL credit while COSC will not.

Ethics in America is doable.
Introduction to World Religions is doable.
Criminal Justice is doable.

TESC gives upper level credits for the most tests. Excelsior gives UL credits for a few more tests than COSC. Your options for UL DSSTs at COSC are very limited for liberal arts. Other options are ECEs (now ECEPs) and TECEPs, which are generally considered to be more difficult than DSST/CLEP.

Hey I keep reading where excelsior and tesc accept aleks beginning algebra. I see it everywhere. Do you know if this is the case. I plan on doing aleks next week. I was going to start with Beginning anyway and then do Intermediate.

TESC does not accept beginning algebra. If you're seeing that they do, you might be looking at old threads. The sister forum tends to have more up to date information on the Big 3.

oh brother! Sanantone DOES know a lot about this. I fully recommend you following her advice in regards to Big 3 credit...we have other issues, but her alternative credit knowledge is encyclopedic.

TESC allows UL for some cleps, as mentioned EC and COSC are pretty close in how they vies UL CBE.

Alternate credit can be obtained inexpensively at the following:

Courses-Independent Study in Idaho-University of Idaho $100ish/credit

Schedule of Courses > Division of Continuing Education > Colorado State University-Pueblo $150ish/credit Great customer service.

About LSU Online Distance Learning $125ish/credit

remember most degree programs at the Big 3 now require a capstone, thats 3 hours UL in your major, you only need 27 other UL credits. In your case it's only 7 courses...spend a little and have fun. you could do it at U of Idaho for about $2100.00 that is actually cheap in the grand scheme of things.

I forgot about Jonathan Whatley. He's a good source of information and a researching machine. We get some things wrong as individuals, but there is usually someone who will swoop in with the correct information. You'll find even more obsessed experts at the other forum. This forum is the best at finding degree programs.
