The PCIP is temporary. From the website:

"PCIP is a temporary program for those locked out of the current insurance marketplace. The program has a limited amount of funding from Congress."

    It will be replaced:

"Starting next year, the Affordable Care Act guarantees that all Americans – regardless of their health status or pre-existing conditions – will finally have access to quality, affordable coverage. People will be able to apply for affordable health insurance coverage choices in Health Insurance Marketplaces when open enrollment begins on October 1. The Health Insurance Marketplace will offer a choice of quality, affordable health plans. Coverage begins on January 1, 2014. Visit Home | HealthCare.gov to learn more about the Marketplace."

Not a government-run program. Guaranteed access to health care insurance.

That short paragraph has "affordable" four times, and the more they say it the less I believe it.

I give Obamacare two more years before repeal. This is America after all. The land of the free. Home of the brave. The rugged individualist, not the collectivist.

Well now it makes sense why he believes that learning a language is a waste of time. Languages are used to communicate with others and in ryoder's world, others are unnecessary.

Whether universal healthcare is reasonable policy or not isn't my issue. My issue is that 2 of my 7 (the BIGGEST 2) employers have cut my courses in half because they are afraid that they will be required to provide health insurance coverage for me... when I already have health insurance coverage.

Thanks for getting this back on track. Here is a silver lining:
You teach at school A and they cut 5 classes from you
I teach at school B and they cut 5 classes from me
Now school A and B have to hire more adjunct to take the classes
We both get positions and have more schools with less classes from each...not all the eggs in one basket kind of thing

It looks like adjuncts are doing great. They don't need employer paid healthcare. What was all that crazy discussions about adjuncts being underpaid and having to work to death to make a living with no benefits.
There are many Canadian on this site who will happily agree that universal health care sucks and that they will happily give up their universal health care to get the chance to adjunct to death. The respectable Rfvavle will support the USA model of no universal healthcare for the chance of adjuncting.

I am to liberal to give up my universal healthcare. Although, I have never voted for a partly left of centre, I am to dumb on this one to know that having others having access to universal healthcare is a bad thing for me. After, I completed my phd, especially if I decided to live in the USA, I will need lots of opportunities to adjunct. Obamacare had just put a wrench in my plans.

    That's what they said, anyway.

Obamacare isn't universal health care. It should have been, but his opponents prevented that. But here's the reality: health care costs money. Unmanaged healthcare costs more than managed care. Everyone uses healthcare. Thus, managing everyone's care would be the best way to go. We could have had a straight-forward system, but no. We get this Frankenstein's monster instead.

In economics, we talk about "externalities." This is the price paid by others for benefits you receive, thus discounting your costs. Acid rain is an example of an externality, where the true cost of burning fossil fuel isn't realized by the ones burning it. Seat belt laws are an example of society's attempt at reducing an externality by forcing the people in cars to better protect themselves in case of a crash, thus reducing the healthcare burden on everyone else. Still, healthcare in the U.S. is filled with externalities.

Rugged individualists? Seriously? Did you go to private schools? Do you have private security and fire protection? I assume you go without insurance. And you wouldn't call 9-1-1 in an emergency, surely. And you don't drive on roads you didn't personally build, right? And certainly you have--or will--decline Medicare and Social Security, right? And veteran's benefits are certainly out of the question since there's no reason to serve your country in the military--unless you took that "Army of One" nonsense seriously. And you do, of course, fly from city to city in your private jet--VFR all the way since you don't want those thugs at the FAA to get involved with your life. Television? Radio? Of course not; the FCC is probably listening to you. Parks, recreation, food inspection, all gone.

Good luck in your rugged, individual cave.

I think it's fair to say that virtually all government run, sponsored or guaranteed agencies and programs are plagued with waste, fraud, abuse and highly over paid workers. Obamacare will be no different.

Here is what I find ironic. I understand private businesses and colleges limiting part-time employee hours as they most likely lean to the right and did not support Obamacare. But why are left leaning states, colleges and organizations that supported Obamacare trying to get out of it? Why are they not embracing it and dumping their pathetic public employee health care plans for the lavish Obamacare health plans?

Virginia workers' part-time hours capped due to health law

Four Public Colleges Will Cut Adjunct Faculty Hours To Avoid Providing Health Coverage Under Obamacare

Washington state mulls dumping its part-time workers onto exchanges to shift costs to federal taxpayers.

Delaware officials say there are no plans to move government workers or teachers from the state's health insurance plan into a new health insurance exchange being set up under the federal health care reform law.

No Obamacare will be repealed. And the US was built on the concept of individual liberty, not collectivism. There are plenty of countries that practice collectivism and this is not one of them. Individual liberty is one's God given right. It is a matter of natural law and is enshrined in our Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights.

Regardless of recent interpretations in the last 100 years, the U.S. Constitution does not support socialism, Social Security or Obamacare at the Federal level. The constitution mandates limited functions of the Federal government, to include the defense of the nation, but not financial or medical provision for the people.

Maybe that was the intention of those who wrote it, but since the federal government has flouted this for the last hundred years, often with support from the majority of Americans, it doesn't seem their opinion is particularly influential.

Nonsense. Do you have any idea what the size of the government is? When you take into account state, federal, local, and tribal institutions, it's even bigger. The vast majority of what governments do in the U.S. is done well. Overpaid? Compared to what? It's simple to offer anecdotes, but where are your facts? Government workers accept a trade-off regarding pay: they have more secure jobs and have fewer opportunities to make a high income. I've been a military enlisted member, a military commissioned officer, a worker in the private sector, a worker in academia, a consultant to government, and a federal government employee. I've seen a lot. But I haven't seen what you're talking about. And it's very insulting.
The vast majority of Obamacare will be administered by the same fine organizations that rip you off for your health benefits now: the insurance companies. Enjoy.

So, the republic was doomed from day one? I'd have to agree, but for other reasons (Jeremiah 10:23; Daniel 2:44). There are very few vote-deciding issues that don't boil down to where the money goes. That's simply the nature of the system- that the point of voting, oversimplified, is to make stuff happen and that in our world, it's money that does the making happen of the stuff.

It also works the other way. People vote themselves money AND buy themselves votes.

For whatever their opinions were worth, I think the founders generally thought so. It would explain why Jefferson said that "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants."

Ever been to USPTO? Jeez, that place looks like the Vatican and most of the people there are well into six figures. But then, they're self financing, so I suppose taxpayers can only complain about them so much?

    Very true.
