Dissertation Only Doctorate

I have what may be an unusual question and am hoping to get some good feedback here. I've been a tenure-track faculty member in Business for the past 5 years and am transitioning to a new faculty job in the spring semester. I'm an MBA and hold a PhD in Instructional Technology, so I was approved by the regional accrediting body as a related doctorate and allowed to teach graduate courses. In my recent job search I discovered some administrators unwilling to ask for an approval from the accreditors due to the tightening of regulations and general paranoia around the accreditation process right now.

Since I already have a traditional PhD and the 18+ graduate hours in multiple Business disciplines I'm interested in finding an online doctoral program in Business, PhD or DBA, that I could pursue with just a dissertation. I have a good record of publishing so the often-discussed PhD by Publication would work if I could find a school admitting outside candidates to work remotely. Basically I just need to get something on my vita that says "doctor" and "business" on the same line to calm nervous provosts and compliance officers. How I ended up with an out of field doctorate in the first place is another story, like a lot of things it made sense at the time...

Thanks in advance for any advice.

In general, the universities that have "dissertation only" PhD programs are found in England, Australia and South Africa.

You're talking about years worth of effort and considerable expense. If I were in your situation, I'd look instead at AACSB bridge programs -- or just stick to teaching for schools that were willing to back me up.

I used to include a section on this in Bears' Guide, listing dozens of schools (Kizmet is correct: all British, Australian, or South African) that do this. But it typically is a very long and not simple process. The late "Uncle Janko" probably did it as well as anyone could, with a South African university, and it took him more than five years. No US school would do it (at least officially; that is why I put a 'bending the rules' section in the book) because the regional accreditors typically limit the amount of transfer credit into a graduate degree program to 25% of the required total. Finally there is the matter of whether a PhD from a little-known-in-the-US, and not necessarily highly regarded in the UK institution would really be a career-advancer. Luton University used to be one of the faster approaches, for instance. Luton (interrabang).

Well, since this board apparently doesn't offer any "advice" that I can't find on Google by myself I'll just cancel my membership and move on.

It's will be AWESOME to watch how a dissertation committee handles you. Remember, over 50% of all dissertation candidates fail or walk away from the process without being awarded a doctorate.

Well, with this kind of attitude I have to wonder why other universities are willing to go to their accreditors for you, maybe it has nothing to do with credentials and more to do with attitude?

Wow, I didn't realize when you search Google for "dissertation only doctorate" it brings up results for "AACSB bridge program". That's amazing!

I can see your disappointment that we didn't, within one day, find you a doctoral program so special that it's never been described on the Internet.

Since you have alredy a PhD but need an extra business credential, you could be a good candidate for the Post doctoral bridge in business from AACSB.

Have you looked into this? You could be awareded a PhD in business based on your publication by Sunderland university. You can look at the link below:

Dont forget to ask for a refund for your membership, I am sure that the advice you are getting is not worth the $0 you invested for this.

I actually just joined the forum because of the great responses to the above comment. I don't even know what the point is of this forum, I just liked the responses.

I am enrolled at Grenoble Ecole de Management's DBA program (AACSB, EQUIS and AMBA accredited). They do have an option of DBA by publication. I can give you contact at the school if you are interested in exploring further.

Forgot to mention.. In our current 2012 cohort, there are a couple of PhD's in non-business working on the AACSB Bridge program. That may be something you will be interested in. Here is the link...

dl_mba: Do you know if everyone in the Grenoble DBA program has to pursue a concentration in technology management or is it possible to do a concentration in other areas (finance, accounting, marketing, etc.)?
