I am in my final semester at Charter Oaks for my bachelor's degree. I just found this master's degree program that sounds really interesting to me, Masters of Science in Nutrition and Functional Medicine. But, I would need two pre-reqs that I have not taken yet: Anatomy and Physiology and either Biochemistry or Organic Chemistry. The local technical college offers them but they are full for the fall. Does anyone know of any inexpensive online colleges where I could take those courses? I checked Straighterline first, but I didn't see either chemistry course being offered.

    Thank you,

    Michelle

I have sources for you, but do you have any of the gen chem done yet? Typically organic or biochem comes AFTER chem 2. Just sayin.

I took A&P 1&2 with lab here: Ocean County College
(I also took my bio, chem, and microbio with them- all with labs- they do not yet offer organic online)
Summer sessions are fast 5 or 8 weeks, and fall semester allows 8 or 16 week option too. You have to complete an application process, but with your COSC degree, you can have them waive the entrance exams/etc. I just enrolled on the phone when I did it- took 5 minutes. (2009)

Organic, (and the others I just mentioned) can be taken here University of New England - Home UNE would be my first choice for all because they are self paced, start any day, many lab options, webcam proctor, 4 year university vs community college - except they are more money. They don't check prereqs, so you could *in theory* just enroll in orgo and see how it goes! Good luck to you!

PS I'm starting a MS Nutrition program this fall too! Canisius College - MS in Applied Nutrition - Canisius College

I knew Jennifer was going to be in this thread as soon as I saw the title....

LOL, seriously, when I signed in today, there were only 4 threads showing "unread." That, and I'm bored out of my mind, so I've been on here often. (no disrespect to the OP, the OP isn't boring- my day is boring :) )

Good you were here. When I saw the anatomy and chem. title the first thing that popped in my mind was that you have been through tons of hoops in getting all of that figured out with the labs and all, so hopefully you would post, and there you were. Is the MS in Nutrition going to meet your needs? I try to change majors/schools often, it keeps me on my toes.

Thank you all for the responses.

I took Chemistry I and II several years ago, although I made a D in Chemistry II, so only Chemistry I is showing up on my transcript.

I've been able to find the anatomy class in several places but am having more trouble with the biochemistry or organic chemistry. Jennifer, thank you for the link to the University of New England. Also, congratulations on finding a good grad school program for you! Do you know of any other schools that offer the chemistry class online, maybe at a less expensive price? Since I will have already finished my bachelor's degree, I'm thinking I'll have to pay for these classes with cash.

Also, does anyone know if it's possible to test out of either biochemistry or organic chemistry with a CLEP test or anything similar? I don't mind studying on my own but am just concerned about the cost of taking the class.

We have a second house not too far from Portland, so I may write to the university to see if I could be admitted provisionally and then take the chemistry class concurrently with my first semester of the online grad classes from the university.

    Thanks again,

    Michelle

Michelle, I think you should ask your school about testing out of Chem II but most nursing schools that I've looked at won't take that for prereqs.

I'm posting here on this established thread in lieu of starting a new one (after extensive use of the search function) and hope to get Jennifer's input too.

Anyone know of a RA Pathophysiology class online? This is for my DD, who has a BA and is finishing pre-reqs for direct-entry or accelerated MSN programs.

Ocean has chem 2 online with lab for less than UNE, but not orgo. Also, if you don't NEED the lab for your program (only as a prereq) why not try some self-study and skip it? UNE will allow you to enroll in orgo without proof of prereq. I can post resources if you're interested in a self study approach before the orgo.

There is no CLEP for orgo or biochem, and as far as I know, there are no general exams. Specific colleges may have departmental exams, but I'd be cautious of those.

I'd also suggest letting this tread run for a week, or doing deeper archive searches here, I'm pretty sure there is an indy option for orgo that someone posted a while back- but I'm old and my brain can't remember everyone's posts lol.

P.S. Ocean is also offering 12 week courses this fall instead of 16. :)

    Jennifer,

I believe you're thinking of Mountain State University (Mountain State University - Official Site, Mountain State WV, Mt State University, Beckley College, College of West Virginia|Mountain State University).

MSU offers a number of science courses with labs, all available via Ind. Study.

Japhy ALWAYS remembers what I forget, he's awesome :)

MBAOnline- Excelsior college offers a pathophysiology exam! It's only $99, I've considered taking it myself. If you venture over to the "other board which will not be named," you'll find a whole thread on that exam. GL!

I found the other thread: http://www.degreeinfo.com/general-distance-learning-discussions/26382-distance-organic-chemistry-i.html
The most useful information from that thread was Tom's suggestion to search for
"organic chemistry" "distance learning" OR "online course" site:.edu

Here are some links for anyone else looking for similar classes. Some have labs, but some don't.

Distance Learn Science Online Courses Accredited CALCampus

Organic chemistry Introductory Organic Chemistry course - UC Berkeley Extension
Biochemistry Introductory Biochemistry course - UC Berkeley Extension

BCH 3025 - Fundamentals of Biochemistry

Online Organic Chemistry -- Online Chemistry & Lab Courses -- Oregon State University -- Extended Campus -- Ecampus

Now that I've found the classes online, I'm not sure that I'm going to enroll in the program. There are some other master's degrees that look interesting to me, and my husband has decided that he doesn't like the idea of me enrolling in this one, so I am taking a closer look at the other programs to see if they'll meet my needs for my long term goals.

<<HEAD SLAP>> I can't believe I'd forgotten about UC Berkeley. Yes, they are a big player too. Well good luck with whatever you decide. I've applied and NOT enrolled in 6 programs over the past few years. There are no shortage of programs, you can be picky :)

I'm just going to throw this out there and hope no one laughs. My pipe dream has always been to work in the medical field in a capacity that gives me the opportunity to interact with people on a daily basis and help them (I know that this is a very broad request). Back in high school it was looking toward the possibility of becoming an MD, but as we all know that reality never happened.

At this point in my life, and with an associates degree, bachelors degree, and now a masters degree, I'm still wanting more. I really like the fields of Physical and Occupational Therapy, and while there are limited distance learning options, I really think I should consider this. My family keeps saying I won't be happy until I'm a doctor (I use that term loosely), and I can't disagree with them. This brings me to my questions.

I need to fulfill the prerequisite courses in order to even consider applying to schools. So my first questions is what are the online options for A&P I and II, Bio, Chem, etc? Since we're midway through the fall, I'd like to find options that don't fall within traditional semester guidelines (in other words ones you can start at any time). I'd like them to be as inexpensive as possible as well.

Anyone have any first hand experience using CLEP/Dantes, etc. for prereqs? So far I'm not getting a clear answer from the schools.

My third question is do you know of any schools that have at least part of the program offered via distance learning (PT programs)? I already know of St. Augustine (thanks to this board), but I'm unaware of any other available options. Also, does anyone know St. Augustine's reputation in the field of PT?

My last question is one that is probably the most difficult, but I would like honest answers (in other words I'm not wanting just encouragement). Is this even a realistic option for me considering family and advanced years in employment, or would this be something that would put my family through the ringer? The masters was tough, but this seems like Mt. Everest compared to a small hill (my masters).

Thanks! I was actually just on their site and they offer several of the prereqs. I can't find anywhere on their site that answers whether or not they offer actual grades or is it just listed as pass/fail. I spoke to one of the schools and they said that they will accept Clep/Dantes as credit towards entrance IF you have the required number of hours to constitute an actual GPA. What I think I'm going to do is enroll in Straighterline courses which should help me gauge how serious I really am about this. My masters really taxed me but I'm fully refreshed now as I've been dormant since May.
