The list of Malaysian Universities that are recognized by WES are

    International Islamic University Malaysia
    International Medical University
Limkokwing University College of Creative Technology
    Multimedia University
    Universiti Malaysia Sabah
    Universiti Malaysia Sarawak
    Universiti Putra Malaysia
    Universiti Sains Malaysia
    Universiti Teknologi Mara
    Universiti Tenaga Nasional
    University College Sedaya International
    University of Malaya

WES not only check for accreditation status but also recognition and reputation. If the school is too new with little reputation, I would not count that WES would recognize it as equivalent to an American school.

For the same reason a high risk for American students that need to use this degree in the US. I know that most people are looking for cheap options but 7K is too expensive if you only end with a piece of paper.

This is not the case in all Commonwealth countries. For example, it does not require an act of the legislature to start a private university in Dominica. (It does require that new institutions become licensed by the National Accreditation Board, which is managed by the Ministry of Education, but that's not the same thing.)

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think there's an actual treaty that covers generally accepted accreditation principles. For example, the National Accreditation Board in Dominica has a bilateral relationship with UK-NARIC that includes mutual recognition, but it's not a treaty. I believe these relationships are more ad hoc, especially considering the Americans have no public sector scheme for international qualifications recognition.

That's a surprisingly short list. Even if MQA approval isn't good enough for them, I'd have expected them to include all Malaysian universities that pass muster with the Association of Commonwealth Universities.

Was it easy to enroll? How do you like the program thus far and do they offer a payment plan?

    1. The university is not listed in my 2011 edition of Europa World of Learning, which does list 14 Malaysian universities. Many (but by no means all) US registrars and HR people use this annual directory as a tool in determining the acceptability of schools.

    2. For under $100, some of the credential evaluation services will give you a report on a given school's degree -- in effect, telling you what they would (probably) say if you submitted such a credential to them. (The recognized evaluators are all members of NACES (naces.org). This might be worth it, before many thousands are spent

    3. Alternatively, and much less expensively, you might wish to ask a small sample of admissions departments of US universities if they would, in general, accept this degree.

    4. As I have pointed out many times, the various credential evaluation services do not always agree on the equivalency of a given school. I have had dozens of letters from readers who experienced this, some of them "shopping around" for a second opinion. As one example, the Edinburgh Business School (a part of 200-year-old Heriot-Watt University in Scotland) was evaluated as equivalent to any American regionally accredited MBA by most credential evaluators, and not even equivalent to an American Bachelor's degree by one evaluator.

JWC; well i actually really liked the program. The Supervisors are quite helpful and i am having a much relaxed time. I paid 1000$ to start the program and luckily received the Scholarship to complete the rest. So its really very affordable for me.

Steve and John; i always respect your kind comments and advices. As i am not a US citizen and neither wanted to work in US, so MEDIU perfectly suits for me. I have checked with my Higher Education Authorities and they will provide me an equivalence of the MEDIU degree which will work perfect for me.

Our Higher Education Authrotities accept degrees from all those instituions which are approved by their counterpart Govts. and are listed with IAU UNESCO. This both applied to MEDIU.

Fair enough -- if a program will help you reach your goals, then that's what matters. In Fadia's case the question was usefulness in the U.S., which is the only reason I went on about it.

I had the Treaty Title incorrect. The one I mentioned is in relation to accounting standards which reflects probably my sunconscious fear of the financial end of year and taxation. a nightmare in this country. The Treaty I was attempting to refer to was General Agreement in Trade in Services. This apparently includes education although there have been attempts to sideline it in that regard. I have included a link to Canadian paper on the issue. Background Paper on GATS and Canadian PSE

I am no lawyer but some interesting questions may be raised after reading the above paper:
    1. Can the US government argue that it has a monopoly under the provisions of GAT for education?
    2. Does the failure of the USDOE to recognize overseas university degrees obtained from universities operating under GAT constitute a restraint of trade or does the USDOE have that power or is it conditional? I note the Canadians expressed an implied dismay about Phoenix U operating across its border;
    3. What is the effect of exclusion of acceptance and recognition of overseas credentials by US universities based upon their foreign origins?
I guess education is now big business and there may already be some decided cases on these issues. It would be interesting to see how far GAT goes in the new globally wired business world and society.

Oh right, GATT. I remember hearing about how that might be a game changer when it came to cross border higher education, but that was a long time ago and I've heard nothing similar since. The Americans seem to ignore trade agreements when they're inconvenient (like when they lost a WTO case to Antigua), so perhaps that's why.

I agree that University of Africa is not accredited.

Assuming you mean the University of South Africa, it has the equivalent to regional accreditation. Their situation and the one we're discussing are not the same. Unisa's been around since the 19th century and is well established, whereas this institution is still new.

Steve & John , I have read many statments about university of south africa regard to Ph.D accreditation and they all vary and not clear . Do you have a link where we can take a clear statment regard to this subject .I contacted WES but no answer .

This is a true statement, no US regional accrediting body would have the authority to do so. The rest of the world they does not have accreditation like the United States. However, Unisa is authorized and approved by the government of South Africa and is a valid and accepted institution.

We understand its not regional accrideted so 95% of world institutions ,but the question is will a Ph.d for UNISA will be evaluated as equivlent to Ph.d in U.S. ?? and Will be recognized by WES or any credential evaluation agency ?
