This really does not immediately pertain to online learning per se, but I just wanted to say that I am set to take the Foreign Service exam in June. I only have a few weeks to study, so I really need to get started.

I was wondering if anyone in the forums has taken this test, or knows anything about it that would help someone who is taking the test for the first time???

I know some in the forum like NMTTD have expressed interest in working in international relations, or the like, so maybe this thread could be helpful, as well.

I will be sure to keep everyone posted on my progress, and what the test is like after I take it, that is if anyone thinks the information would be helpful!:wavey:

If you can, dig up a copy of the old Chevy Chase/Dan Ackroyd movie "Spies Like Us" It has a funny scene about taking the test.

As with all tests, sleep well the night before. Eat a light, healthy breakfast. Stay cool. Kick butt.

    Best of luck.

A long time ago, I took the FSEE with absolutely no political science experience or inclination. I missed by 1%. I would have done much better if I had a clue about poly sci at the time. I could be wrong, but the college that you attended is still a differentiator even if you pass the exam. Ivies have an edge in the State Department, IMHO. Not to discourage you, but this is reality.
Having said that, here is a link to some exam help from the State Department:
Test Information and Selection Process - U.S. Department of State

According to the State Department, the test will consist of "a broad range of topics including, but not limited to, the structure and workings of the U.S. government, U.S. and world history, U.S. culture, psychology, management theory, finance and economics, and world affairs."

I'm sure this is the case! I didn't get my credentials from top-shelf schools, but at least my academic record is great. I just figured it could not hurt to take the test, and it's FREE to take, so there's no loss if I don't pass it, or if I don't eventually get hired.

Initially, I was not too interested in working for the State Department, but my friend basically did most of the legwork in figuring out which career tracks are looking for the most applicants. For right now, the Consular Track seems to be the best bet. He's advancing through the process, and is almost to the point where he will be considered for jobs.

The foreign service seems like it could be really interesting, rewarding, and a lot of fun if given the opportunity. We'll see what happens!

Well, I took the test a couple of days ago. I felt pretty good about it overall, but I wish I had had a little more to study. I feel like I busted out a pretty good essay at the end. We'll see if I actually passed in a few weeks. Although, even if you pass the FSOT, I've heard that doesn't necessarily mean that you make it to oral interview session in DC, so I'm not really going to be holding my breath. At any rate, it's been a good experience.

If anyone needs any info about the test just let me know!:smoker:
