A third threat of the week from... Euclid University. Now we're "defacing" them.

Just received this lovely new threat from Euclid University via one Daniel Jason Gonzin.

I find it particularly interesting that we're affecting Euclid University's "social life." Does this mean people are no longer willing to come out to the University's formal dance and other social events as a result of the alleged post?

I also find it amusing that the alleged post is somehow "breaching the privacy", especially since it never says whose privacy is allegedly being breached, and the post referenced has absolutely nothing that would fall outside of publicly available information.

And, of course, it's a different person who threatens each time.

I guess some people never learn.

The "attorney" is supposed to be representing a "university", but says "affecting his Business and Social Life".

His business and social life? A high school student taking a HS-level journalism elective should pick up on that identifier blunder in a second.

    Thanks for the laughs.

"As the admin of that particular site, you has the power to remove that particular link,"

I stopped reading right at this point.

Oh, I skimmed the email too fast, and missed the following lovely gem included below the body of the email. Anyone every heard of the "United Nations International Covenant on Online Defamation and Breaches Privacy Rights"? I wasn't able to find any references to it anywhere.

Additionally, the only reference I can find to a Daniel Jason Gonzin having to do with any legal work is this document which appears to have absolutely nothing to do with Australia... and the email itself appears to originate from Russia.

    Interesting.

Perhaps each person is "replaced" when their threat fails to achieve its desired effect. Good-bye Gonzin.

I think that in order to take a threat seriously, it ought to use proper grammar.

    How can:
    be taken seriously?

    Absurd.

    Gonzin was a defendant in that case.....a search of Martindale and the Virginia State Bar showed zero results for an attorney with that name. However, there is a registered sex offender with that name in Virginia;

United States Department of Justice National Sex Offender Public Website

Daniel Jason Gonzin in , - Registry of Criminal Offenders or Sex Offenders

You would think the fools would at least use the name of a real attorney (instead of a registered sex offender) like Vincent Gambini/Jerry Callo did in My Cousin Vinny.

It's funny that these people think they can scare you with an email. It is highly unlikely that an official letter is going to be delivered via email; it's not secure and it's too easily modified. If there was a legitimate suit in the works, you would receive a registered letter. This is just a moronic attempt at a scare tactic by someone who does not understand legal matters.

Chip, do you ever reply to these and tell them where to jump off?

What exactly was said about this place that was false, misleading, and slanderous to their credibility? How on earth did anything from a mere online forum legitimately affect them? I think this email is seriously funny. Good bathroom reading material if nothing else.

I think that the term "defacing the reputation" may be admitting that Euclid University is nothing but a diploma mill with a thin transparent facade for a university.

Instead of threatening legal action it would be more frightening if the apparent sex offender that signed the email instead threatened to move into your neighborhood.

Oh great, now you have designed their entire legal path. Which team are you on?

Well, years ago, one Sheila Danzig, proprietress of a bazillion shady, unwonderful, and in at least a couple of cases, illegal operations, had her crack legal counsel Enrique Serna sue Steve Levicoff for calling her fraudulent school (the Monterey Institute for Graduate Studies) a fraudulent school. So frivolous or otherwise unfounded lawsuits do, indeed, happen.

Unfortunately for Sheila in this case, Serna was only licensed in Texas, but not in Florida (where MIGS claimed to be) so he lied his ass off and claimed in the lawsuit that students had come to his office in Texas to sign up for the school, but were dissuaded by Levicoff's posts. Only catch was... by admitting that, Serna acknowledged that MIGS was soliciting students and doing business in Texas, where they were not registered. Levicoff seized on that, reported the issue to state authorities, who promptly fined MIGS some astronomical sum ($250,000? I don't remember for sure). Interestingly, they pointed out that Serna couldn't credibly argue that the school wasn't in Texas, as he'd already stipulated to that in a legal filing... so he was stuck either admitting he made that up (which would have been grounds for disbarment) or acknowledging that the school did have unauthorized offices in Texas. This, of course, quickly put an end to both MIGS and the lawsuit.

I still love telling that story because it just reeks of the shadiness and incompetence that is typical of such unwonderful schools.

So yes, people do get sued for comments on message boards. However, it's a pretty steep burden of proof to show defamation, and I don't think most people realize that.

    Wow :sgrin: That was entertaining.

Levicoff and I have never crossed paths, but I've read dozens of his posts from past threads here and on another board to remain nameless. Always a fun read, whether he is playing the role of the hero or villain :lick:

    Nothing.

It isn't slander if it is true. Therefore, nothing.

I think you highly underestimate this forum. We has the power!
