I mentioned to a friend my intentions with a degree and they said they wouldn't recommend it. I have my BS in Business management (IT Specialization), I was considering my Master's in Corporate and Organizational Management (Project Management specialization) or Master's in Technology Management.... Same people say don't repeat your undergrad for example if I have my undergrad in IT Management, don't get a Master's in the same thing...... Then some say, Corporate and Organizational Management is too far off.... What do you all think? I think communication is important no matter the field and can relate to many things.....
Would you agree that someone with a bachelor's in biology should never go to graduate school in bioogy? Would you agree that someone with a bachelor's in English or philosophy, (plus the hard science requirements), should never pursue medical school? No? It depends on the student and their individual strengths and interests and what they want to do with their careers? That answers that. So, who are you? What are your individual strengths and interests, and what do you want to do with your career?
I don't think there is a perfect answer for that question, because it all depends on what you want to do professionally; if your advancement prospects would be improved by a degree in another discipline and you have the experience in Business/IT so that you don't need a second degree in the same discipline to prove your expertise, then fine. On the other hand, the more degrees you have in a particular discipline, the more of an expert you appear to be. Again, it all depends on what you want to do with your career and there is no pat answer.
First I think you have to ask yourself what do you really want to get out of this Masters. Is it for career advancement ? If so in which particular direction are you headed ? The more technical aspect of IT or more general business management ? I've been advised by many lecturers and employers that if you want to be a specialist in a field, do a concentrated masters in that field, eg a Financial Controller would have to do a MSc in Finance or a MBA with specialisation in Finance. If you feel your undergrad specialisation is good enough and you want to get a more managerial position in your field, why not do a MBA ? If the Masters is for personal development...then heck, it could be in anything once it makes you happy.
To confuse you even further, my degrees will be in Social Sciences and Business (General Management) despite the fact that I have no plans to work in any of the social sciences nor in business management :thinking: Resumés are not stenciled. Each is as unique as the individual whose name appears on top. Figure out your goal, reverse engineer the possible paths to it, then choose the path which suits you best.* *Probably the only real advice Maniac Craniac has ever given anyone in his entire time here at DegreeInfo.
Thank you all for your input. I'm still undecided. However, leaning towards Masters in Technology management with Project Management & Leadership specialization.
