Are there any online M.Ed programs not requiring me to be currently employed as an educator or a certified as a teacher? I am working in industry presently and plan to retire from this position in 2015/16. I would like to teach once I do. I was a K-12 substitute teacher in Texas for the 2009-2010 school year.

Here's a thought. The American College of Education (ACE) offers an online MEd. They are RA and very affordable...about $7,000 for the whole degree. I was admitted even though not currently employed as an educator, but I was a certified teacher. Here's the thought. The Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI Home Page) gave me a provisional HS social studies certification based on a variety of undergrad hours I achieved even though my bachelor's is in management. This ACSI cert was enough to satisfy ACE even though I had never been a teacher. A couple of cautionary points: (1) you might want to search the archives of this site for "American College of Education." There are some limitations with their program; and, (2) all your classmates at ACE will likely be experienced teachers which can make for a sometimes challenging learning curve for the person with no formal teacher training. Much success!

Thank you. I had spoken to ACE recently and they wanted me to be a certified teacher, and preferred that I work in the education field.

What you want is an MAT (Master of Arts in Teaching) and I have included info on MAT degrees in the M.Ed Sticky, above.

Northcentral University doesn't require you to be a teacher or be certified. No GRE requirement.

If I am reading your post correctly, you are seeking additional preparaton which will enable you to become a teacher in Texas. That being the case, Texas has a number of organizations where you can obtain a teaching credential without going the M.Ed. route. All you need to enter the alternate certification program is the required number of appropriate subject hours in your undergraduate degree and have a 2.5 gpa. Some of these programs can be started online (eventually you have to put in time with your student teaching/intership). An additional bonus is that Texas recognizes both RA and NA degrees for teaching certificates. Just find one of the alternate certification programs that will accept both types of accreditation and go for it. The largest alternative certification program in the state accepts both kinds of accreditation.

Can I ask why you want to get your M.ed if you already have a four year degree? It varies state to state (I can only speak for FL) but most districts will offer the required education classes as professional development and they are free. It is not a M.ed but it allows you to get your permanent professional certification.

Wow, I thought I had to have RA to teach. Maybe I don't have to spend $350 per hr the last 30 hrs of my degree.
