Im new to this site, but I like what I've seen on here so far. Right now, Im in college working on my BA in International Relations and Diplomacy. Im really loving it so far. Well, except for the Macroeconomics class Im currently in. OMG. I hate economics. lol

After i finish this, I am going to get my Masters degree in either Diplomacy or International Relations. Not sure which, yet.

Once I finish my Master's degree, I am hoping to go on and get a job with the UN as either a Diplomat, working for UNICEF, as an Ambassador, or something involving foreign diplomacy and conflict resolution. I do not have any military affiliation.

Im also a mom and a wife. My son has autism and I home school him. My daughter will be starting kindergarten this fall. My husband is also in college fulltime online as well as owns his own web design company.

Thats about it. I'm glad I found this site, and Im looking forward to "meeting" you all!!

I'll be honest and tell you that in the past my view of the United Nations was a that of a group of old men who sit around talking about problems but never actually doing anything about them. Recently, however, I've done a bit of reading about the UN humanitarian missions and I've come away with a different opinion. Those old men will talk and talk but while they're talking there is another group of people who are actually putting it all on the line to give real help to real people all across the world. Good luck with your career.

The U.N. supported the Berlin Airlift. The U.N. acted to stop the North Koreans. The U.N. helped calm the Balkans. The U.N. supported Desert Storm/Desert Shield. The U.N. has provided a forum for the superpowers (and others) to mediate their differences. The U.N. was created largely by the U.S. because we needed to engage the rest of the world to maintain the peace. WHO, UNICEF, Refugees, the International Court of Justice, war tribunals for the Balkans and Rwanda. The U.N., despite all its flaws, has had a tremendous impact on world peace. The U.S. is responsible for 25% of its funding, a bargain.

We can't say authoritatively what the world would have been like without the U.N. But I say it could have been much, much worse.

Since this is the Introductions forum and since NMTTD's greeting has been dragged off-topic I'm repeating my welcome to NMTTD and locking the thread. If anyone wants to pursue the topic of the United Nations they may do so in the Politics forum.
