I was on a jobs board and an ad popped up for a 100% DL Masters degree in Social Work from the University of Southern California. It's a great license eligible degree from a name-brand school (probably costs a ton of cash) but there's not that many around so I thought I'd throw it out there. You got that right!! "Tuition is currently $1,420 per unit, and the estimated total cost for a student in the MSW program will be between $82,000 and $86,000." Frequently Asked Questions | USC | School of Social Work
A friend of mine looked into this but once she saw the price tag she quickly backed away from it. Thats A LOT of money. It really is. Better choices would be: Boston University Cost of Attendance » School of Social Work | Boston University University of New England MSW Program | University of New England Florida State University FSU Online - Prospective Online Students - Graduate Programs - Social Work
If you're interested in doing an MSW through DL... don't limit yourself to USC. There are a number of other CSWE-accredited programs out there that are DL as well. For instance, University of North Dakota (UND) has an accredited online MSW that is only $488 per credit hour... which is GREAT for graduate-level tuition. My university charges $775 per credit hour. http://distance.und.edu/degree/about/?id=msw4nonbsw2&page=1111
FWI... CSWE lists quite a few accredited Masters degree programs in Social Work that are done through Distance Education. See them here: Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) - Distance Education They include, among others... Boston Univ. CSU Fordham Univ. Long Island Univ. Michigan State Univ. Texas State Univ. Univ. of Denver Univ. of New England UNC-Chapel Hill Univ. of North Dakota Univ. of Tennessee Univ. of Utah Virginia Commonwealth Univ. So... there are quite more than a few accredited DL masters-level social work programs. Definitely look further than USC... especially with that price tag!
That's quite a price tag to prepare one for an occupation that is not known for it's high compensation. Rewarding, valuable, but rarely highly compensated.
Also... the fact that your MSW is from a "prestigious school" (whatever that means) will have a minimal effect on your professional social work career. For instance... my friend who graduated in 2007 with a MSW from USC (before it was online) is doing work that requires a Bachelors Degree. The only difference between she and her colleagues is that she has a lot more school debt to pay off. So... when choosing a school, look more at the training programs to see if they fit your needs, and get field placements that will help lead your career in the right direction. And ALWAYS SELF-ADVOCATE. Your local no-name college's accredited Social Work or Mental Health Counseling program will more than likely be just as good as USC, Fordham, or any other big-name "ooh and ahh" university.
Cal Stat Northridge has a MSW that can be done online if you have a BA in SW. Department of Social Work: Graduate Program
