    Hi -

Looks like we may have missed our usual couple of weeks of speculation in anticipation (or in the wake of) the semi-annual DETC meeting. (Jan 19-20) Here's the latest:

    Newly Accredited:

    Apollos University
    University of Fairfax
    Shiloh University

Uh-oh ... a couple of Show Causes (no reason shown) :

    Perelandra College
    Yorktown University

One no longer accepting enrollment: U. of Atlanta. Current students will be in "teach-out" status and the accreditation expires in 2013. U. of A. is the re-branded Barrington, which was subsequently DETC accredited.

    Read all about it here:

Stranger and more interesting to me is the new applicants lists. I say "lists" because the list given in the report and the one on the website differ.

    Report (linked above):
    Grace Communion Seminary, Glendora, CA
    Iteach U.S., Denton, TX
    Nations University, West Monroe, LA
University of the People, Pasadena, CA

    Website (here):
California Institute of Arts and Technology, San Diego, CA
    Grace Communion Seminary, Glendora, CA
    Hawthorn University, Whitehorn, CA
    iTeach US, Denton, TX
    Nations University, West Monroe, LA

Clearly the list on the website was recently updated because Nations is now on the list ... yet University of the People is not? The list in the report is termed "First Time Applicants" and the one on the website is called "Applicants for Initial Accreditation" so are the two terms referring to different things somehow? If so, that's rather odd & confusing. If not, which list is correct???

    University of Atlanta/Iverson Business School.

They ( University of Atlanta) share (according to Wikipedia), the same building as Iverson School of Business. I used the online chat version to ask. The representative called me an idiot....

A representative will be connected, please be patient.

    Ed Guthrie enters the chatroom.

It will be nice if the *University of the People and the Saylor Foundation can collaborate. They both are well financed and both have strong academia' support. *From my limited observation, they both will complement each other perfectly if operations are amalgamated. The strength of UOP is the Weakness *of Saylor, and Saylor's strenth is UOP's weakness.

Here's what University of the People says:

At present, University of the People is not an accredited institution. The University is in the process of preparing the necessary materials to apply for accreditation from an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education....

Assuming DETC is where UOTP is applying, then DETC does not list applicants until they have successfully completed the self-evaluation documents. This is a major exercise and usually takes quite a while. I'm assuming UOTP is still working on theirs. (I prefer to use the abbreviation UOTP because U. Phoenix has had UOP to itself for quite a few years.)

Re: Amalgamation. Yes, it would be nice, BUT -- here's the word from Saylor web page (and yes, I agree it's a great source of learning) :

Because we are not accredited, you will not earn a college degree or diploma; however, our team of experienced college professors has designed each course so you will be able to achieve the same learning objectives as students enrolled in traditional colleges.

Didn't know there had been any talk of amalgamation. It appears from those statements that the two might intend separate lives. Maybe you could convince them how great they'd be together. :)

What was the University of the People's strength again?

The amalgamation musing was my trial ballon, if I can call it such. The breath and depth of Saylor' courses are amazing. UOTP may be become accredited. I can see the syngeries of both organization colloborating not in a formal amalgamation but by a MOU. The benefits are that UTOP can focus on delivery and Saylor focuses on its courses. Both will save resources from avoiding duplication and (more) students win.
    Everyone reads degree info.

Would anyone care to characterize these three schools? Specializations? Costs? Etc.

A few observations about Apollos University:

    1. They need a much more professional-looking web site.
    2. Their MBA tuition appears to be about $4,800 for the whole program.
    3. Many of their faculty members received their degrees from University of Phoenix. I'm not saying that's good or bad. It's just an observation.

NU listed as initial applicant with DETC
    Newly Accredited
    Apollos University
    Shiloh University
    University of Fairfax

Apparently University of Atlanta, Norcross GA In teaching out status and ceased enrollments.

There is a couple show causes.

The University of Fairfax has been around a long time. They focus almost entirely on graduate programs in Information Security. Searching their site for "tuition" doesn't lead to anything that looks like it lists their rates, which I usually consider to be a bad sign.

Since I'm relatively ignorant of how this works, does this mean that the two schools mentioned under "Show Causes" (Perelandra College Yorktown University) are toast?

Not necessarily. But it is very serious, as it's their last chance to show DETC that they're making significant improvements before they become disaccredited.

Might be (at least in part) because (I believe) Apollos and UoP are basically under the same ownership umbrella.

I don't think so. Phoenix is the crown jewel of the Apollo Group, but the name similarity seems to be coincidental. Besides, if they were owned by such a large entity you'd think they could afford a site that looks like it was designed after 1996.

I can certainly see reasons to think so. The two schools ARE at the same address, per their websites - as Tireman already knew. Both U. of Atlanta and Iverson show 6685 Peachtree Industrial Drive. The building has a large Iverson sign on it. According to what I read, both schools are owned by the Mithani brothers.

    U. of A is in teach-out mode, as we said, and it appears Iverson is being sued by former students - here. Students Sue Business School
