Does COSC Now Accept Transcripts Directly from FEMA?

Noticed this when looking at COSC's website today:

Non-traditional Transcripts are Accepted at Charter Oak State College

I know they've really made some changes there recently - are they now accepting FEMA credit without having to "launder" it through FCC? That would be awesome.

 

That would be huge! I hope its the case. I have sent my former adviser an email on the subject, perhaps she can clarify it for us.

In my mind COSC has set itself up in a severe competitive disadvantage by not accepting these credits directly from FEMA. If they refused on academic grounds to accept them that would be one thing, but to force students to spend $75 a credit at another institution in order to award credit is just silly.

 

Reply from my COSC adviser:

According to the information on the Charter Oak Web site, a prospective student can submit the FEMA transcript directly to COSC. COSC Registrar’s Office will evaluate the credits using FCC criteria. In other words, the evaluation will not be done by COSC. Regarding credits from non-traditional sources, COSC uses evaluations from acceptable organizations such as the American Council on Education. FEMA credits are not evaluated by the American Council on Education, but the FCC evaluation has been acceptable to the COSC faculty.

So I guess they are indeed accepting the credits direct from FEMA!

 

If that is a direct quote, it says they accept credits from FCC transcripts only, as they are not otherwise evaluated by ACE.

 

She specified that they are using FCC's criteria to evaluate the transcript sent direct from FEMA. The above was the product of a 3 email exchange.....it does seem deliberately "wordy" I would have prferred a simple yes or no.

We need someone to try it and confirm! I wonder if they will accept my FEMA transcript. I don't think so since I have already graduated.

Just received a clarification e-mail from the Registrar's office;

"Thank you for your message. For our students, we will honor the Frederick CC evaluation of the FEMA work. So what this now means is that we will accept the FEMA transcript directly and apply the possible credit evaluation attached to those courses that had been done by Frederick.

As our student you will not be required to pay Frederick CC to transcribe these possible credits; simply have the FEMA transcript sent to our registrar’s office."

So there ya go!

 

Once the FEMA credits are applied to COSC transcript, will they then be able to be transferred to another University/College? Or would they only be able to be used at COSC?

 

Depends entirely upon the receiving college and how you want to use them.

 

That's great. My wife has a bunch of FEMA work done. I think I will order an evaluation for her from COSC toward a B.A. in liberal studies.

Glad to help a little. I have actually been doing what I could behind the scenes to see this come about. (letters to the registrar, provost, etc...). I think COSC should offer a basic Certification like Clackamus CC, Guam CC, and Red Rocks CC. Those are all great programs if your local, but difficult if not impossible to complete if your from out of state. A school with Nationwide interest like COSC or TESC could step in and solve that deficiency while acting to increase their own enrollment numbers.

 

Good job. It has occured to me that many of us have caused change in higher education by becoming involved.

I suspect that some members here have a much better understanding of the beast that is distance education than many employees of schools around the country. Its easy to forget that modern distance learning is really only a decade or so old. Its understandable that there are challenges, and exciting to consider programs that might lay just around the corner.

Perhaps no one better to drive education than the student themselves, ultimately they are solely responsible for the use of what has been learned.
