Hello napninjax. Welcome to Degree Info. I think the answer to your question is yes but you need to provide more information to receive a usable answer. There are plenty of free programs like this one, but it is unclear as to what kind of certificate you are looking for. Wow, I have never heard of ALISON. Have you tried it? It looks like they have a decent variety of subjects.

Wasn't there a thread about free online courses (non-credit) posted a few years ago?

No, I've no experience with these programs, but I agree with you, for free, they look interesting.

I've tried Alison. The info is good if you want a general idea of the topic areas you're interested in. All of the exams are EXTREMELY easy. BUT the amount of free certificates, is very limited to the most uninteresting of fields. The more attractive ones, such as Accounting, Economics etc, after you ace the exam, you have to pay a fee and ordering cost for the certificate to be shipped to you....In some cases you may be able to receive one via .pdf in your email, but again, you have to pay for this. Rather disappointing as I was led to believe that all the programmes were free.
It is good however for revision. I did the economics and it was pretty much a refresher of what I did in O'Levels....
    Hope this helps somehow.

Well, if you want to mince words, the program was free, but the certificate wasn't. How much did it cost? If it's not too expensive, it might be useful for padding your resume with impressive sounding certificates.

A diploma costs about 70 Euros and a certificate about 25 Euros. That non inclusive of shipping charges for the paper parchment. Signing up and writing the exams are free.

On further inspection I have seen they have 3 locations:

    ALISON
    Unit 20 and 21,
Level One Building - 2nd Floor,
    Galway Technology Park,
    Parkmore, Galway, Ireland.

    ALISON, c/o Advance Learning, Inc.
    89 Headquarters Plaza,
    North Tower, 14th Floor,
    Morristown, NJ 07960, USA.

    ALISON
    30 St George Street
    Mayfair
    London W1S 2FH
    United Kingdom

I found this on the website as well:
"In an effort to keep programme costs down and to retain the current motivational-based format of ALISON, ALISON has not sought to be nor been approved by the US DOE, CHEA or DETC provider and does not represent itself to be an “accredited” programme of any of these organisations."

The certificate courses are not "impressive" to me as I went through the coursework of an entire course and wrote and passed the exam (85%) within 2 hours....and I'm no Stephen Hawking. The diploma in Business and Law took about 3 hours (85%). I agree with you, this is a site that would mostly help to pad resumes. If you think it will help, pad away my brothers...

No thanks, that was just a passing comment. I have no need to pad mine either.
