I got information today that Andrew Jackson University will be changing its name to New Charter University. This will take place September 19, 2011 and the offices will now be moved to San Francisco California. Everything will remain the same as it was before but slowly they will be going from text-book based to competency-based courses. This would reflect Dr. Monaco (new president) coming over from Western Governors University. So I am guessing this is a step towards improvement. They also assigned Dr. Dana Offerman as Provost and Chief Academic Officer. If many of us remember she is also the Chief Academic Officer at Excelsior College. They are upgrading the students services and they are making sure that student tuition will not be raised (well for now that is). They are also taking steps towards applying for regional accreditation. So New Charter University..... Would we call this another name in the Trident University world or might it actually sound good?

New Charter? Horrible name. Makes me think of "Old Charter" --the whiskey.

I dom't like to say it, but I think Trident was a better name change........and I hate the "Trident" name.

New Charter University is a HORRIBLE name. What were they thinking? Andrew Jackson Univ is a much better name. They just went from sounding legit to sounding like a Mill operating out of a garage in Alabama.

I agree! I hate the name.

The registrar is also the shop manager.

Not a fan of the name ... unlike most things in modern western society, a university being "new" is not usually considered a good thing. Being prestigious is important, and usually the most prestigious universities are the ones that have been around for a long time. Why would they drop a former president from the name (which automatically elicits a certain amount of respect) for a name that means basically nothing? Personally the name change makes me less likely to attend the school.

If enough students complain there could still time for them to reverse their decision? Maybe point them towards this thread?

Ugh. I guess I can see why I will never be a CEO or C-level person in a business organization. The name just pops out at me as being so ridiculously amateurish that I can't focus on any of the (perceived) good things. I'm too focused on the stupid name to see the busines acumen. They are making a money grab pure and simple and I'm not saying that is a bad thing. But in colleges, as we have seen, perception is everything. Crappy name, move to another state (that does not look good no matter the reason) and **wink-wink** not raising tuition? Yeah OK. Only the functionally retarded will buy that last bit. How are you improving student services? Magic? No, your going to invest money in technology and people, as in spend money. Spend money to make money. Tuition will go up. It will go up when and if they get RA status and it will go up when they "improve" their student services.

And the name will still suck.

You'll need new acronyms now or you'll have trouble telling this NCU from the other NCU.

This name change makes the name Trident University International look like a sensible business decision.

The name accordimg to New Charter University is to be "NEW". The edu website will be NEW.edu. I think this is the worst idea that anyone can come up with. If its not broke don't fix it people. I understand it was a smaller school and the new president and owners are trying to make a name in the market but seriously????? I don't know if they even took the students opinion but they might not even keep the students they have. New Charter University sounds like a elementary school library for kids 7 and under. This is the best example of the saying," sometimes the more educated you get the less common sense you keep". Gooooo NEW .. :soapbox:

Great, now I cannot get this song out of my head!

It’s the New Zoo Revue, coming right at you...
Where three delightful animals have fun with what they do.

We learn with our friend Doug (our friend Doug!)
I'm his helper Emmy Jo (Emmy Jo!)

    With Freddie!
    Charlie!
    Henrietta!

We have fun learning what we don't know.

Delicate and feminine is Henrietta Hippo.
Very wise and very smart is Charlie the Owl. (Whooo!)
Lots of spark with lots of parties, Freddie the Frog.

It's quite an unusual thing, the animals talk and sing...
With Doug and Emmy Jo, everyday's a different show!

The "new.edu" domain name was activated on September 2, 2011. It is associated with the following contact info:

    New Charter University
    543 Howard Street, 5th Fl
    San Francisco, CA 94105
    UNITED STATES
    (415) 494-8240

There is now a "New Charter University" home page posted at new.edu, although there doesn't seem to be any linked content yet. The home page does list a phone number of "1 800-429-9300 ext. 1" -- which is identical to the number shown on the current AJU home page.

That's a really good question. For me, the name "New Charter" only brings one association to mind: it resembles "Charter Oak", which just happens one of the biggest names in DL degrees. That may or may not be fair, but it really is the only thing that occurred to me when I saw the "New Charter" name for the first time. Apart from that, the name has no associations for me, either positive or negative.

So here's a question for the "experienced academics"...

I did some adjunct work for AJU a few years ago. Do I leave AJU on my vita, or change it to New Charter University?

+1, horrible name. Glad I dropped that program, I'd have been too invested at this point to do so. <whew>!

I think it sounds like many things
    1. The name of a bus company training school. New Charter is looking for new drivers! $9 dollars an hour and flexible schedule. Become a student at NEW Charter.
    2. A sign outside of building that has meetings for people attempting to overcome some kind of addiction.
    3. A charter school that will not be around in a few years. Mainly for people who cannot afford a private school and are sick of homeschooling.

It seems totally unfair to compare New Charter University's name to that of a bus company.
In reality, a name like "New Charter" could apply to many other things.

Like, for example, an air freight service.

I'm not fond of places named after presidents, especially if there's no actual connection to the president. Sounds tacky to me, like trying to claim the integrity of the President. Maybe an Andrew Jackson University brick and mortar school in Nashville would be nice, but what exactly is the connection of this school to Old Hickory? Washington and Lee University is fine because the former donated money and the later served as president. It's like Thomas Jefferson School of Law. In California? Why not name it after a famous jurist or politician from California, like Earl Warren or such? Presumably they were trying to get fast luster because they were previously part of Western State University, a for profit school, and thought naming it after Tom Jefferson would divert attention away from that.

Don't care for the name they chose though.

    Looks delicious.

AJU had one of the best online school names IMO, now I'mjust dumbfounded. I don't get where the fondness for certain names comes from, but it is shocking how much it blinds people to how bad it sounds. Case in point, TUI who just HAD to keep the initialism and picked an unfortunate "t" word to plug onto its beloved formula. Now, New Charter has chosen some obscure reference of some... uh... thing... which is likely either a pet nostalgia trip of some Suit&Tie or the proud creation of some hokey artsy-fartsy ad hoc commitee in favor of the credibility of a notable historical figure in American history. FAIL.

I guess they have never hears of a focus group.

Based on my experiences in different organizations, I believe that it is entirely possible that the president/CEO came up with the lame name, but no one in the organization felt comfortable enough to question it openly.
