Just wondering - for those teaching online, how many are seeing significant changes in terms of reduced teaching loads across colleges?

I was doing courses through UoP regularly, one after another. My last course ended on March 14th. My next one doesn't start until the end of May. My wife has experienced something similar with UoP.

So far, no drop off from my schools (DeVry, South) and an increase in recent months with Regent.

Actually, I have seen an increase in enrollment for IT related courses. With the current economy, many people go back to school to update credentials.

I have heard from a few online adjuncts that Grand Canyon University has been reducing adjunct faculty load in favor of hiring more faculty full time close to campus.

Courses seem to be coming at me faster than I can accept them. Granted, I teach for several schools and I teach in fields where there are shortages of adjuncts. If you find your work dropping off, you can use the time to pick up additional graduate work to expand the subjects you are qualified in.

    Truckie,

For how many schools do you teach at the same time? How many courses you can handle at a given time if you might to share? How many hours this takes you?

I'm having troubles keeping 3 courses at the time as this takes me more than 25 hrs a week so I wonder if it is just me or perhaps I suck at time management.

I am currently teaching 6 courses at my full time job (plus directing a writing center, with tutors, etc.). I also teach 5 online courses right now for three different schools. So a total of 11 courses. Five online courses is pretty normal for me. I range anywhere from about 3-6 at any given time. I used to spend much more time than I currently do. I have gotten much faster in the courses. But I certainly do NOT spend 8 hours per week, per class.

This is good advice. I am already in a doctoral program - and I will just focus on that for now. Thanks

Today, I was contacted by DeVry (I already have one class starting today) offering me another one, because they had to open another section. I teach English, btw.

Well, I do not count the number of classes I have going at any one time because I teach for multiple schools regularly, each with differing course lengths and start dates, so number of classes does not give me any valuable data for time management purposes.

What I do track is number of students I have at any one time. I cost out my time on a per student basis. I usually have between 100-150 students at any one time.

For time management, I do the standard things we have covered such as common postings, etc. At my primary faculty gig I try to set up courses to minimize my workload on any given week by staggering assignments where possible throughout different courses. For example, in course A which I will teach two sections of per term I will have a paper due in week 3, but in course B where I also have 2 sections I will have a discussion activity due in week 3. The following week I will alternate. Does that make sense?

Time committment per week - about 30 hours total.

Wow! So you work a full time job and teach up to 6 courses at any given time. Do you teach grad or undergrad courses? Just wondering.

Yes, I do the full time college job, plus the 3-6 online adjunct courses. I teach undergrad. Class size ranges from 15-25 students (first week), though those numbers tend to drop over the course, as people drop, etc.

Load increasing for me. Just finished 2 courses for Axia, in the middle of 2 and started 2 new yesterday. I always have 4 at a time. Also increasing at IWU and I'm waiting to hear on an increase at LU.

I am finding this to be true. This is the first session while teaching at DeVry that I have not had at least one class since I began 2 years ago. My dry period for UoP is going on 4 months now. The third university I teach for online has not offered me anything past this term yet. But I teach in the humanities, and we are the first to go. Damn not getting a science degree! Anyway, this summer I may be border-lining on starvation if something does not pick up!
