After a long process of sending out CV's and applications to every community college I could find, I have my first interview this Friday. Oddly enough, the interview is to teach business at a local, state sponsored, AACSB accredited school. I’m a business exec now so I know all of the basics (attire, professionalism, effective communication, etc.) but I wanted to reach out to everyone here to see if there are any nuances to interviewing in the world of academia. Any advice you could share would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Trent

Good luck with your interview on Friday Trent. I've got an interview with DeVry University tomorrow morning myself. It sounds like it will be a 30-minute interview followed by a 15-minute teaching demonstration. You might want to take a look at Home - The Chronicle of Higher Education, which is the website for The Chronicle of Higher Education. They have a forum section specifically oriented toward the interviewing process which contains several pertinent suggestions which should be of benefit to you.

If you don't mind me asking, is it CofC or the Citadel? I know that CofC is beginning an MBA program this fall. The only think I can recommend, if it is at CofC wear some pastel colors. You'll fit right in.

It's with CofC, and I fully intend to break out a purple seersucker suit with a pink tie! I'm looking for any advantage I can get.

How did your interview go on Friday, Trent? I hope it went well and you are offered a teaching position with the school soon. My interview with DeVry University earlier this week went extremely well as did the teaching demonstration. I was offered a Visiting Professor position with DeVry which allows me to teach up to 38 semester hours per year and requires me to participate in some DeVry training activities and an occasional student event.

This was my first actual academic job interview and teaching demonstration so overall I'm extremely satisfied with the outcome. I was expecting an oral interview board similar to the law enforcement job interviews I've had over the last 15+ years but my interview was conducted with only one individual. This was only my second one-on-one interview I've ever had, the last one being with UPS shortly after I finished my active duty tour in the Army.

Keep us posted how your interview and hiring process works out for you.

Well everyone, I am happy to report that my interview went extremely well and I was offered a job on the spot. All of the spots for sumer classes were filled so I'll start teaching on campus in September. While it's not finalized, I'll probably be teaching Quality Managment, Strategic Management and Project Managment classes. I owe a big thanks to everyone for thier advice and well wishes. I'll keep everyone in the loop on how things go.

Congrats, I'm sure the seersucker suit is what sealed it.

Why not? Teachers don't know everything, and are the first to admit it. Besides, they really like learning!!

But I do know everything - I do. My wife calls me a "know it all" constantly! :popworm:

It is apparently a good thing that I'm not teaching typing :)
