I have a DL grad degree and I'm proud of it.

There is so much bashing of degrees earned online happening on this board that I would like to open up the opportunity for those who have a DL grad degree, bachelor's degree, associate's degree or are close to completing one, to step up to the plate and say they are proud of their degree and their accomplishment. How has it helped your career?

No DL bashing on this thread please! Let's leave the debate for all the other threads.

I'll start. I earned my teaching credential mostly online except for the student teaching. I also earned my education master's degree online. Both have never caused a raised eyebrow from any employer and I have a very enjoyable and secure job because of my DL degrees.

    $7.50

    $10.00

You can't buy much more than lunch with those two figures... unless they happen to be how much your pay increases per hour!!!

Those two numbers are, respectively, my hourly rate increase with one of the firms I contract with and the amount more I earn per hour at my new job than if I did not have an Associate's Degree.

    I win!

    ¡Yo gano!

    Je gagne!

I complete them and they served me well. Promotions and teaching jobs. I can't hang a dollar amount on it since my salary tripled in the past 10 years but can not be equated directly to only a degree. I have made a tidy sum teaching and that is a direct result of my masters.

Even though I don't work in the legal field, I'm proud of my distance education legal degrees. As an entrepreneur I'm confronted with legal issues almost daily so it has been a big help to know how these issues might affect me. I'm currently taking business courses with PFC to expand my knowledge. All in all it's been a win-win.

Also many start a degree program but few finish. I think that's one thing some posters tend to forget.

It's a relief having an Associate's from Excelsior, as it does clear some hurdles. It'll be a bigger relief when my online BSIT is finished.

I'm 3 credits away from a BS in MIS. I am completely happy and proud and only wish I had done it 20 years ago. No pay increases yet, though I am getting interviews I wasn't before and my management treats me with a skosh more respect.

I've applied to the Business Analysis and Consulting MSc program at University of Strathclyde and hope to be proud of that degree in about 3 years.

I'm really proud of my BS from Excelsior. Although in my opinion it is not a distance learning degree but it is a distance degree because I earned my credits from two UK schools and around 10 US schools. A few of my credits were earned through TV courses offered by the Los Angeles Community College District. This BS degree got me into two grad programs.

If you have a DL degree or are taking courses to take one you should be proud. Just the fact that you want to improve your education is enough reason to feel that way. In my case, I always wanted to go back to school and was fortunate enough to get offers from different B&M schools but external circumstances prevented me for accepting them. Now I finally have the opportunity to finally get those degrees that I always wanted… Funny thing, I don’t need them anymore…

Also, for all those that state that DL courses are easy by default are wrong. I compare some of the courses I’ve taken via DL and I can tell anyone that they are sometimes harder than the courses I took for my undergraduate degree from a top twenty B&M US university.

    You da D.Surf!

I hear that! It's so nice to finally not be degreeless. It will be even nicer to finally not be bachelorless.

    Siempre!
    Siempre!

Según diría mi amigo Abner "Ay, que Koolcypher."

I got my degree from Excelsior 19 years ago (Regents then). It got me a teaching job a year later, and now it's getting me into grad school.

Proud? Absolutely. Hopefully, it will open doors; time will tell.

Everyone should be proud of their DL degrees. Why not? I will say once again, a degree is merely a piece of paper. It is up to the owner of that piece of paper to succeed. Congrats to all of you on your great achievements. Just attaining a degree is a huge achievement. In essence DL degree or not, if you have desire, good work ethics and aim high in life, you will prevail.

    Have a good weekend!!!!

P.S. I would also would like to thank the many members including but not limited to Dr. John Bear, Dr.Pina, Dr. Randell, Dr. Moe, Dr. Curly and several others for schooling me in the ways of DL :), and which DL schools were properly accredited, utility, etc. My life has changed quite a bit (for the better) since I became a member here several years ago. Sharing beneficial information that may help others is among the most noble of maxims.

Oh, your degree will open doors, don't worry about that. You seem like a guy that knows how "to work it". :)

You have hit on an important point with your casual comment. People who know how to work it will go a lot farther. You know, like the Abners of this world.

I just turned in my last assignment for my U Conn MS in Accounting degree. I came in at $22K for the entire program which isn't trivial but isn't astronomical either.

Am I proud? Of course but it doesn't necessarily resonate with my peers. I'm 41 so the notion that I'm 'graduating' from something is seen as odd. The fact that I'm graduating from a top-tier University literally many, many states away also makes it somewhat odder. Add in the fact that I'm seen as a 'finished product' with an AACSB MBA from a respected state school already and it's even odder.

But I enjoyed the experience. I'm sure I'll be able to use the new degree to do more adjunct work as U Conn was rated as high as the top 20 in Accounting graduate programs fairly recently. I proved I could hang with young bucks who are public accountants despite always having worked in industry.

I've applied to walk the stage in Storrs as well. GPA is in the 3.9 range but I've had a few A+'s which helped to round out two A- and the dreaded B+ (gasp!). Depending on how these last few assignments are graded, it's possible that I might even hit a 4.0 but, at the end of the day, it's the experience and not the number that matters.
