The rumors are true. Here is a leaked photo of their mascot

Why Trident? No reason other than a name that kept TUI as an acronym. What is University International? Nothing that make sense right? They had it in Touro. And since many still preferred Touro instead of TUI, they thought that folks prefer Touro because of the University International in the name. So to tap into that "past glory" as well as maintain TUI, a word that starts with a T; and they settled with Trident University International. The name is bad. Period.

It's not a rumour. It is infact their new name which becomes official on the January 24, 2011. I received the notification letter from them too. It reads in part...

As you have heard, we are working hard to rename our University, giving meaning once again to T.U.I. We also want to make sure that our new University name aligns with the academic excellence and compassionate student support for which we are known. As you may have already heard, we’ve just launched our new website and have much more news to share with you in this New Year.

As an existing student or member of the alumni you are such an important part of the T.U.I. family that your feedback and input is essential as we continue to build a great University. Based on feedback we have already received from you during this process, we are pleased to announce to you in advance of the public announcement, our new university name. As of January 24th, TUI University will officially become:

    Trident University International
    The Story Behind the Name
Academic Excellence Compassionate Student Support Unparalleled Access
Now, here's the line that I like. "If you haven’t already done so, registration for the Winter session has been extended one week until Monday, January 24. Enroll now at http://sss.tuiu.edu or call 1 (800) 509-7853."

So are they going to give you the option of getting new diplomas? If so, would you (alums here) take it?

Maybe Trident University International is hoping to partner with Colgate University.

There is a growing trend for university presidents to come out of industry. Hence, they may not have a PhD. Some have MBAs, others JDs.

The key person to lead the academic operation is the Provost. That individual certainly needs a doctoral degree.

    Regards - Andy

If we are going Legend of Zelda with this, I vote they change the name to Triforce University International.

I don't think Trident University is a great name, but I do think it's better than TUI University. I'm not sure why they seem so hellbent on keeping the TUI acronym, but to do that I'd probably have chosen an historical figure or place name or something non-goofy like that.

Having lived in the UK for many years the trident was considered a symbol of leadership - for example the penny carried an image of Britannia holding a trident for many years, as did the Daily Expess newspaper and the occasional postage stamp.

That may be the case, but when I think of "trident" I think of the gum or this:

Neither of which screams "prestige". o_O

I think I will just list it as:
    MS-ITM / MBA - Touro University International

Actually, you would not update your resume - you graduate from Touro University International (just like I did - a private non-profit school with an almost normal name). I refuse to put Trident on my resume - get real!
