Well I had my teleconference to discuss my application to Saint Joseph's University yesterday. I unfortunately was barely given the time of day because they apparently accept no degrees from any for-profit university no matter the accreditation that they carry. I was basically told my degree was worthless in there eyes and that I would need to take my business elsewere. How bunk is that sh!t.

Where the heck is your undergrad from U of P?

No its from American Military University. Odd part is that it is only SJU's business school that will not accept the degree. All other departments will accept it free and clear. But I needed the MBA because of the officer program I want to apply for in a few years.

There are other schools to which you could apply that have no issues with AMU I'm sure.

MBA programs that are AASCB accredited and fully online and carry a concentration in Healthcare Administration are few and far between

What is so wrong with for-profits in their eyes? Take Ashford and Grand Canyon for example. Both companies have taken schools that have had only one campus and were falling apart and made them top notch. Ashford and Grand Canyon provide a huge degree selection and have taken old run down campuses and pumped millions in to them. Have you looked at GC and Ashford’s athletic facilities? GC campus as a whole is nicer than almost any non-profit. They both hold RA and met the same set of standards as any other RA.

With all of this anti for-profit fever going round, we need to set up a new ranking system for accreditation......us people with DETC degrees can make room for the for-profit RA degrees way down here, we can huddle together for warmth. [IMG]

This is why it's better to get an online degree through a state university.

That's stupid. I'm not a fan of for-profit schools. (I worked for one and saw too much from the inside.) However, it is ridiculous not to recognize the degree at all. Why not just require a higher GMAT score or some kind of leveling work?

Sometimes this is just not a viable option for those in the military. My TA bascally paid for my entire degree. A state university would not have worked out that way. There is nothing wrong with a degree from a for profit school and I would willingly compare my degree to a BA In Human Resources Management from a state school in a heartbeat.

Not all for profit colleges are created equal. I have never witnessed any "predatory" recruitment from my school. The GMAT is a requirement for their degree's at SJU no matter what.

It might be worthwhile to appeal to someone higher up than your interviewer and then, perhaps, the accrediting bodies themselves, including CHEA.

    Good luck!

Maybe they had old info that showed AMU was a DETC accredited (I believe it is now both DETC and RA).

Per the OP though it sounds like the problem is with their for profit status. I can understand programs requiring earned degrees to meet their accreditation status (AACSB or ABET, for example) but have never heard of being shunned for your qualifying credentials being from a for profit institution. So in theory, my TESC degree should get me in, but his AMU degree won't? That's crazy.

What do you mean by they "accept no degrees" from FPs? If other departments at SJU accept your degree, but not the business school then perhaps are you misinterpreting their comments. It is quite possible that if your undergraduate is in business, them SJU does not have to recognize your business courses to meet MBA foundation prerequisites as AMU is not AACSB. AFAIK, a RA school must recognize an RA degree.

This sounds a bit suspect. I'd get back in touch with them and speak with someone else. Hell, Harvard Business School took a kid with no undergraduate degree a few years ago. Beyond that, as far as for-profits go, I think AMU has one of the better reputations. What exactly does SJU expect enlisted service men and women to do if they want to earn a degree while serving?

I do not think there is any way to require differing entrance exam scores based on where the applicant's undergrad degree is from. The leveling coursework is a diffferent story as admissions is free to intepret if coursework meets prerequisites.

No I did not missunderstand it. It was stated quite clearly "no degrees from for profit schools will be accepted into SJU's Haub School of Business program"

This means NONE they brought up Strayer and UOP as well as my school as examples of degree granting institutions that are automatic disqualifiers for their MBA program

Try this link Accredited Online MBA Programs regarding online AACSB accredited MBA programs; three at a quick glance are:

George Washington University: AACSB MBA Healthcare
University of Colorado-Colorado Springs: AACSB MBA Healthcare Administration
Suffolk University: AACSB MBA Healthcare Administration

To the OP, for what it is worth, I think Suffolk is a better school than SJU and I know GWU is. Look into those programs. I know GWU is crazy expensive, though. Good finds, major!
