I know I heard of a doctoral degree that did not require a dissertation and I thought it was CTU but that is not it. I thought it might be a good idea to compile a list of doctoral degrees that did not have a dissertation. Here is the only one I know of:

Nova has a Doctor of Health Science - Through professor-driven, student-centered online course delivery, coupled with an internship, practicum, doctoral analysis, and two one-week on-campus institutes, the D.H.Sc. program challenges the student to examine the current state of health care, and to consider their role in the provision of services to their patients, clients, and the community at large.
Doctor of Health Science Program | Nova Southeastern University

This does not look like much of a "dissertation" -
    Capstone (required) — 2 credits - DHS 8120 Doctoral Analysis - http://www.nova.edu/cah/healthsciences/forms/dhs_curriculum.pdf

    Any others to add?

My daughter-in-law did not have to write one for her UC Ph.D. in a marine science. But she did so at the last moment after her advisors said it was a good idea for her future plans to work in academia.

    a D.Min without a dissertation/major project:

Palmer Theological Seminary | Baptist Seminary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania PA | Programs | Doctor of Ministry

Doctor of Ministry in Leadership of Missional Church Renewal

-All students attend a three-day orientation session in June.
-They attend four (4) two-week intensive seminars held in January and June, ---followed by independent work on professional papers.

    Three Major Papers
Requirements of the program include the development of three professional papers of at least 40 pages in length. The first of the three focuses on (a) developing a lifestyle of spiritual discipline that will facilitate an ongoing experience of spiritual renewal and personal discipline and (b) providing a biblical theology that undegirds such a lifestyle.
The second paper requires students to examine the role of leaders and systems in the transformation of congregations; to articulate a missional focus as part of this transformation; and to evaluate the cultural perspectives that affect congregational transformation and the effort to become missional.
The final paper integrates theological instruction, field experience, quantitative research, and analytical insights as each student creates a missional strategy (strategic plan) in his or her ministry context.

I could provide a long list of degree mills that offer such programs! Of course then I'd expect it to be further qualified that the programs needed to be accredited. :D

Isn't a doctorate without a dissertation a little like having a hamburger without any meat?

This question is pretty easy to answer. There are lots of PhD by publication in the UK. All you need are ~5 high quality journal articles and you are good to go.

Thanks for stealing my analogy :chairshot:

I thought the point of a doctorate was to complete a dissertation.

The ones I've checked out (apart from U of Middlesex) also required the recipient to be a member of the university stafffaculty.

I receive emails from CTU periodically on their DM program - I beleve their DM is primarily on-line but regular visits to their campus are required.

It seems to be again very much depending on the PhD student - faculty relationship. There is an interesting account from the perspective of an examiner and this form of PhDs at:
    PhDs by publication

Law degrees and medical degrees both carry the doctoral title and require no dissertation.
