If you could do it all over again...

  1. If were able to start over again, how would your approach to distance learning change? What would you do differently?

Probably the first thing I would do is be more frugal with student loans...

Would have started (and finished) years ago when I initially discovered it, the first time the bear sat on top of a column.

    Well Mr President,

I would have double majored in undergrad. My original intentions were to double major in History and Meteorology for my undergraduate degree. I did do the BA and MA and finally PhD in History, so I am sorta there.

I would have stuck with the doctoral program I started in 2004. I I had, I would be done by now.

I might have changed majors on my undergrad.

I would have finished with FMU years ago and would have had a masters as well. Now I wish I would have just found Lamar State University last year and I would be almost done with them.

I would have done more research before I just plunged into a school. I also would have found a place to get my normal teaching degree instead of the alternate route runaround.

I would have started with an AA or AS in business, graphics design or MIS after my enlistment and found a good four-year college to finish up at. I really hate I did the whole AAS (electrical technology) degree thing now but that’s in the past.

I would have not changed schools so many times for my Bachelor's. I transferred in and out of three programs before I completed my BA.

I can honestly say I wouldn't change a thing. My DL experience has been almost uniformly positive and has enhanced my life in ways I couldn't have imagined when I decided to return to school and finish my undergrad degree almost a decade ago now. I'm sure I could have finished sooner or saved some extra money along the way, but really, I'm a very satisfied customer.

I would have gotten my AA at Clovis and used the money I saved toward more courses for my Bachelor's Degree. I also would have started much sooner. I planned on taking CLEP the very summer that I graduated from high school, but I didn't take my first until less than a year ago. My first inclination towards DL was about 5 years ago, when I was seriously considering APU (Well before I realized how well-regarded it was in the DL community, in fact, well before I realized that there was a DL community and even way back when I thought I wanted a school that was accredited "nationally" rather than just "regionally" LOL!). However, I didn't enroll with Excelsior until just over a year ago.

By the way, it just hit me that I have been a DegreeInfo member for over a year now! WOW! MichaelOliver too, since, if I recall correctly, we started in the same month, October of 2009.

My only regret is not knowing about this forum and the information provided much sooner. College counselors do not exactly push CLEP or DANTES, etc. I was basically a B&M RA student at a CC for almost ten years!!!!! Though I do not regret it! After that, it was a LONG road to finsh my BS and MBA!

Thanks to those on this board who motivated me and shared their knowledge so freely.

    I thank you all!

    Abner :)

The only thing I would change is that I would not have taken so many units through University of Phoenix. But then again when I started I was ignorant to the whole DL thing and just wanted a degree. I knew nothing about accreditation, perception, etc. However, I am glad that I found degreeinfo.com and learned about CLEP/DANTES exams and Excelsior College. CLEP/DANTES helped me finish much quicker and cheaper (I did over 40 units of CLEP/DANTES units), I am also glad my undergrad is from Excelsior and not Univ of Phoenix. Otherwise, the ride has been great. I just wish I could make up my mind on a doctoral program.

I would have started earlier as well. I found out about this awesome board a couple years before I finally took the plunge and completed my BS CIS at Exclesior.
Doing all of this from Europe was a bit more challenging (finding test centers for CLEPS, Dantes, doing exams at embassys that I could organize to invigilate, etc.).
Thankfully I knew before I started what RA was and how I could invest my time and money in the most beneficial way possible. That was because of this board, Dr. Bear and bain4weeks.

After a break of a couple years I am now slowly (barely at a crawl) working on my MBA at Heriot Watt (EBS). But my motivation on the MBA is personal growth, so I don't mind taking my time and avoiding conflicts with my family and very small children. The MBA recommendation also came from this board.

Thank you everyone for your support!

If this board still exists I will reach 1000 posts around my 40th year as a member!
By this time I expect B&M to no longer exist and all students will study remotely! :)
