I couldn't care less if NA becomes as accepted as RA....what does irritate me is when someone is given advice on the non-universal acceptance of NA credits, enrolls in a NA school anyway, then comes back to complain that their degree/credits aren't accepted somewhere. That actually happened either here or on the old alt.education.distance newsgroup

They likely did that with the thinking that they would be the exception and could get theirs accepted. If they are going to a NA graduate school, and they either already have a job or will be getting a job once they get the degree and the employer has told them the NA degree would be just fine, GO FOR THE NA DEGREE!!!!!!!!!! Its so much cheaper, education quality is excellent (well, in my personal experience), and in that scenario you can't go wrong. Its just sad to me that it takes that type of scenario to make NA degrees more accepted. It just bites. NA schools tend to offer a more diverse selection of degrees, with really interesting classes. Some of their programs are REALLY hard to find. So in MY opinion, I like NA better. BUT, for the sake of my kids, my future career, and making money, I had to jump ship and come to a RA school that THANK GOODNESS in NOTHING like Ashford. Ugh. Their accreditation is up for review in 2014, and with all of their problems and horrible reputation over the last few years, I wouldnt be surprised IN THE LEAST if they lost their RA.

I forget the specifics, but the person was enamored with a DETC school, but wanted to attend an RA graduate program. Several people (including me) warned that DETC degrees were not acceptable for many RA graduate programs (especially so back then), but he/she went ahead and did it anyway. Some time went by (the person had significant transfer credit so it didn't take long), and they came back, complaining that they were rejected by every graduate program to which they applied, due to their DETC undergrad degree. I don't do it often, but I said "I told you so".

I'll do some searching to see if I can find it, but the problem is that I can't remember if it was here or on the alt.education.distance newsgroup.

It doesn't work that way, not even at the contemptible DETC. Accreditors don't wait for renewal to address issues that threaten a school's accreditation. If a school was in danger of losing its accreditation, the agency would have already taken preliminary steps (you've read about them on this board) to correct things. At some point the accreditor will go public with the issues (as a public service to consumers).

NA schools aren't necessarily cheaper. A lot of the DETC schools have raised tuition, and the ACICS schools charge quite a bit (as much or more as many RA schools).

But all of the accreditors are guilty of accrediting some questionable programs, it's just that people tend to only want to focus on the ones national accreditors fumbled on. The DETC has made some bad calls in the past, but they do correct them (not that anyone ever wants to give them credit for that), whereas it seems like regional accreditors allow bull to happen for a much longer time before a school is stripped and most of the time they're never stripped.

Schools like Ashford and University of Phoenix have been involved in so much BS and yet they remain accredited. I haven't even heard of Ashford getting a slap on the wrist for the financial aid game you mentioned, where if a student withdraws, suddenly the bill starts increasing. They tried to pull that on me too, as well as many other students. Unfortunately for those slimeballs, I kept records of everything I did there including screenshots of classroom activity and all my financial documents, so when the numbers weren't right I sent that document with a legal threat and magically everything was fixed...

My DETC MBA from Columbia Southern University got my feet into the US soil, landed a good paying job in a telecom company, then currently with a 6-digit annual income after taxes in a power generation company. Not bad at all.

You know, Columbia Southern seems to get a lot of high marks from students, press, and employers. I wonder what they're doing over there to create such a sparkling perception? Whatever it is, keep up the good work.

I appreciate the different approach of this thread to add valuable end-result content to the somewhat circular talking points on the subject. Master of Business Administration and Doctorate of Business Administration degree varieties and content and the nationally verses regionally accredited program debate are areas I have looked deeply into. My favorite first-hand knowledge success story is not about me but a colleague that obtained a DETC doctorate specializing in organizational behavior and leadership. Her credential and knowledge she gained while attaining it helped her achieve and do well in the position of a call-center branch General Manager marking her debut into the $100,000+ pay club.

I believe the accrediting bodies and schools are doing their part and it is also up to the students to do well with their DETC educations and blaze the trail forward for non-traditional education paths. Success stories are the good "proof" many are looking for.

Anyone else have any new DETC success stories since the last post on here back in Sept? I dearly LOVE my RA school, and I wouldn't change it if you paid me to. But a tiny part of me is still sad that a NA degree would not yield the results FOR ME that I know a RA degree will. One of the really unique things about DETC schools is you can get a really diverse education with classes, and majors, that you simply cannot find elsewhere. I still drool over a few of the DETC programs that are out there, but as I stated, I'm happy where I am. But perhaps someday, when the time, personal circumstances, and money are right, I can go back and get a DETC degree from one of the better known and respected schools out there in a really interesting subject. Now THAT is something I would love. And if it provided me some utility, so much the better!!!

As a former "nay sayer" of DETC programs I have changed my tune.

I am a graduate student at Columbia Southern University and it's great! Theprogram is accepted 100% by my employer (the federal government) and willafford me the opportunity to advance into the executive ranks.

How I bought in: others in my field told me this was a great program. Afterseveral months of hearing this and looking for a grad program I signed up withCSU. However, I had no idea how much I would enjoy and learn from it - again Iwas a DETC nay sayer.

Also, as I alluded to in other posts my opinion of DETC programs was anuneducated one, basically I went off of what other nay-says said here andelsewhere.

I am very happy this thread was posted. It gives other schools theopportunity to be freely represented in a positive light.
To sum things up, this graduate degree will do everything I need it to doand much more!

I know three persons who have earned the MBA from CSU: one serves in administration at a major hospital; one in city management; the other in law enforcement. All speak highly of the CSU program. I actually served as a proctor for two of them to take final exams.

^^^ Some strange things happened with the formatting in your post. I just erased the "/" in all of the formatting to reveal the technical flub. I wonder if it was a web browser incompatibility issue?

Anyway, I hear nothing but good things about Columbia Southern University, and this is yet another example.

I think it's supposed to do that if you want to specify a font.

Look! This is a flyer for the PTA Bake Sale!

...for example.

Normally, yes. But I figured there might be a technical issue since there were all kinds of word spacing issues with words jumbled together in addition to the font change, and recruiting never posts like that.

if you look at the text of your post (55) LearningAddict, you'll find that all seven examples of words joined together were there - before and after your modification.

Obviously no biggie - just looks like someone typing in a hurry. No "technical issue" at all.

Now I'm thinking it might have been a cut and paste from another program like Word or something. Sometimes when you cut and paste from Word into a forum like this, there can be some spacing/formatting issues.

But yes, no big deal, just curious.

I am going to a DETC accredited college. I was recently accepted into a RA college that said they would only accept a bachelors degree from a RA school for entrance into a masters program. I had to go to the Dean of the College and present my case. My acceptance is contingent upon my degree being conferred. I attend Columbia Southern University. The college is pursuing regional accreditation, but I can't get any good information as to when this is supposed to go through.
