You guys have me on the fence about continuing at HMU, for they are NA and DETC only. ODU has been in my crosshairs.

Although the HMU was sought for personal enlightenment, my future has become a small concern to me.

I am waiting to hear back about if CIU is going to get accredited. I heard the were but I am waiting to hear if they are from the individual that can. I think I am going to NCU unless they give me the answers I need.....

  3. In almost every conceivable way (other than cost):

PhD in English @ ODU > DA @ HMU

I heard from CIU the Dean of Academics said that they are in the process of applying for regional accreditation and there are many teachers already teaching that are attending the school. Now I am leaning back toward CIU... arggghhhh...

Looks like to cost is $15K for a Doctorate. If they get RA the price will go up. NCU is about $36K ($600x60 credits). The price will probably go up as it has been. When I started it was $475 a credit now it is $600 - a $175 increase in 6 years.

You need to weigh out - do you want to gamble that CIU will get accreditiation? How much will you save if (and it will) tuition goes up? With a price increase at CIU, how much will be saved over NCU - $10K? Is it worth a $10K gamble for a maybe? It is all a best guess.

At my school, all credentials, including accreditation are checked by HR. If HR has questions, they usually see me.

@ Cravenco, you've been around this forum long enough to know that DETC accredited degrees are not favored for teaching positions even by many of the schools with the same accreditation. So why waste your time with it? If HMU was sought for personal enlightenment, then its is a fine investment. The reality it over time, that myopic thought expands, especially, when considering the many more doors that a doctorate should open, and then you see that getting a doctorate is is limited in utility is a very bad business. Goodluck with your next moves.

NCU's tuition and fees (un-ending list of fees) for the whole program is $40k NOT 36k.

Bottomline: If you want am degree that will be discriminated less, an RA doctorate is the way to go. Also, don't ever fall for "we are seeking RA accreditation" talk by any institution. Do you know how long they've been telling folks that? Also, what if they seek RA accreditation and they fail to get it, then what?

Except you have some money and time to play around with, always go an RA school. Degrees from online-only schools are discriminated against enough, getting one from a DETC school may make you hate yourself. Goodluck with what you decide!

Thanks Cyber. The time on here has shifted my thoughts indeed. Although the shift has been slow, it has been of such.

Degreeinfo has proved to be an educational tool for many, including myself. I am applying and sending paperwork to ODU as we speak.

I have moved to Capella. I wanted to go where I felt the most comfortable and I felt Capella was the fit for me. Do any of you have a PhD from Capella? Thanks again for all your input. I also have an interview in November with APUS! Things are looking up!

    Teaching with DETC MBA

    Hello,
I am new to this forum and have some questions for those of you practicing in the field. I have an MBA from a DETC school and would like to teach some community college courses at a RA school. Are there any of you out there that are currently doing this, or am I likely to be denied a position because my MBA is not RA, rather NA?

Also, I am looking to begin a PhD, or DBA program within the next 2 months. I am wondering if I am going to have a problem being accepted to a program that is RA with an MBA that is DETC/NA? Any suggestions?

I have a NA Masters and have been offered adjunct faculty positions at 2yr colleges. Two to be exact. Borth were RA schools.

Two year RA colleges only require a RA AAS to teach at the AAS level. Subsequently, anything above that is immaterial, to include DETC (aka NA) or diploma mill degrees at the Masters level. Congratulations on being offered a job.

Graduate admission into a PhD depends on many factors. Many schools would admit just with a RA BS but they will ask you to earn more credits than a MBA holder for a PhD while other schools would require the MS or MBA from an RA school before admission.
If you are going for a PhD in the UK, Australia or SA, a MS or MBA is not required in many cases but the prospect PhD student must hold evidence of research potential by holding a BA (hon) that requires a thesis.
In few words, the MBA from a DETC school is not going to play much in admission into a PhD but it might help to fill the gap in a resume of some that need a credential to show business expertise.
I would personally consider a DETC degree for personal development or continuing education. Let's say that I already hold a MS degree from a good school but want to learn something for personal satisfaction (e.g. Religion, History), then the DETC degree would make more sense to me mainly due to low cost.
