Hello, some of you will know that I was preparing a PhD Theology with the University of the Free State in South Africa. I registered in 2008 and have just returned from South Africa yesterday.

Of those who received doctorates in Theology at the ceremony on 15 Sept there were : 3 South African, 1 South Korean, 1 Canadian (me), 1 Swede. My defence was more than an hour long. It was a good experience and permitted me to meet some people at the faculty who I had gotten to know about from a distance.

All the work I did was from distance and would encourage others to look for PhD studies abroad if you can, and by distance if possible. It has been a good experience for me, both this degree and the previous DEd from Unisa.

    Congrats, Dr. Dr.

Your post prompted me to go look at Free State's website. Did I see it correctly that students in the US (and so I assume Canada, as well), pay 50% over the "regular" cost? Still not, bad, it came out to about $3000, if I added the numbers up correctly.

The fees are indeed doubled for non-South Africans. But as you can see from the exchange rates, the amount is pretty good from our stand point.

I have been looking at further PhD's as the number of topics grows. But for now, some article writing and research project requested by the faculty in Bloemfontein using the model of the last dissertation. They suggested another postdoc so could consider that too.

Congratulations, Brad! You deserve respect and recognition for your accomplishment.

Odd side note: I was a little surprised to find a misspelling on their homepage. "recognised" ?? I suppose it's because it was written by individuals who do not have English as their first language. That does not negate your awesome accomplishment though. I hope I can persevere and be where you are in a few years.

That would be the fine scholars at Oxford Dictionary who corrected you. I'm just the bearer of links. :)

Thank you. I have always seen degrees as bricks. One can follow another, just with time and they can interlink so that what work has been done can help lead in to the next degree if its wanted. I am always amazed reading the signatures in this forum the studies that are on going. Many people work hard for their accomplishments in often difficult situations in life. I would encourage everyone to continue and not give up.
