because its none of their freaking business

this has nothing to do with fear or privacy

its just none of their business

B&M is different, I have to show up in class, so people have to see me, but I don't have to talk to anyone. I can come in at the last minute, sit in the back and be the first one out the door if I wanted. And, yes, I could wear a ski mask if I wanted. The point is, "if I wanted"

But this prof is requiring me to post a pic for a grade

that is ridiculous, that's what I rebel against

what I look like has no effect on well I'll do in the class, I'm not interested in networking with other students, I'm not interested in cohesion. I just want to do my work, take my test and get my grade.

when I was in elementary school and it was the first week of school, teachers would often make every student in class stand up one by one and tell a little about themselves and their family: how many siblings you have, what do your parents do for a living, that kind of stuff.

It was supposed to help everyone get to know one another and help the teacher learn all the students names.

I HATED that ritual every year. All the other students would talk about their parents and jobs and then it would be my turn. I would just sit their quietly and turn red. I would not stand up and I would not talk. My father was in jail for life, repeat offender act, three time loser.
I was 8 years old and I've got to stand up in front of everyone and tell them, "my dad's in jail for life. I only get to see him every couple of months"
    FU teacher !
I hate these stupid requirements that have nothing to do with the grade and "building community bs"
hated them then, hate them now

I have the perfect solution! Take one of the photos that so many of the school websites use - as discussed in this thread, and post one as a pic of yourself. :D

Of course, the stripper-graduate is actually a photo of me. Ah.. now the secret is out. (If only my mirror would realize it - it's one of those carnival ones that puts on oodles of pounds.) :(

I would personally refuse and appeal any attempt to reduce my grade if I refused. If I didn't win my appeal, I would immediately withdraw from the school. What does my appearance have to do with my academic performance? Noting at all.

I would rebel against a requirement like this online school - but that's me, anyway. I hate stupid rules (hey, like my sig), hatehateHATE them.

You had every reason to hate rituals like what you went through. The instructors (or school, if it was required by the administration) obviously didn't care at all about the kids - can't tell me they had no idea about your situation.

That's one of the reasons I homeschooled my kids for a number of years. My son was/is dyslexic, and they would have put him in one of those "special" classes. So we read, went to museums, read, went to libraries - and read some more. I put them back in school in high school (four kids - too much for me) and today he is determined to go to med school (he's in community college right now).

This requirement will show just who is the white, anglo saxon, blond students - and who all the rest are. Granted, if they were all in class, they'd see each other's faces - but I wonder how diverse the classes would be (or are, if it's also a B & M school)?

My kids are blond and *gasp* white. I'll make sure to let them know that people like you are out in the world and that you'll automatically de-value them because they are part of some imagined majority.

How about some diversity of thought?

Find another school or take a different class that fulfills the req. You can post a big long diatribe, but it still boils down to being a requirement.

I say that in way of being honest, not condescending.

    I'm not taking the class
    I'm just giving my opinion
and if I were taking that class I would drop it in an instant

03310151 - I hope I didn't come off as offensive as I mentioned a similar argument. I don't believe identifying the problem (and yes, I agree, it can work either way with issues like race) should be considered part of the problem.

  14. I don't really understand where this resistance to posting pictures is coming from.

I've only had one class where it was required. Turned out, it was my favorite class. Could be a coincidence....

I think it's a good idea in principle I just think it should be voluntary. I strongly believe most people would participate voluntarily so why force the remaining 5 or 10%? Even a perceived negative becomes a real negative, as it affects attitude, etc.

What kills me is that the sexual assault is the same "category" offense as drinking an alcoholic beverage.

I went to a private Christian high school for three years and had to deal with pretty much the same code of conduct. Also 2 years @ Messiah College, but the code of conduct wasn't quite to strict. Similar premise but not so strict with things like music and PDA's (public displays of affection for you acronym neophytes LOL).

    @kizmet:
    LMAO! That was great :)

    @Jon:
Christians schools do have serious priority issues in my experience.

I'll echo Rickyjo's thought: I also hope I didn't mean to come across as offensive. I didn't mean to offend anyone - just been in a lousy mood.

My ex-husband, the father of my four (now adult) kids, passed away last week. This makes the third of my mom's "death comes in threes" belief.

    She was right.

It was intense, lots of memories stirred up (two of my kids were with him when he died), both good and bad. On top of it all (because just having one stressful event just isn't enough for my life), we came home after the wake, funeral & long drive to the Veterans Cemetery to some nastiness from my landlord. Continued to the next day, and ... I couldn't take it anymore (I'm the type to try to keep the peace, no matter what. But this was the straw...) so I blew up.

Now I think I need to find some other place to live. (They live here & are always in my face about something. Sigh... I just want to live ALONE... in PEACE!!

Oh, and my oldest dog is getting old VERY fast - I came to realize he's showing signs of doggie dementia. Sigh... it just doesn't stop...

So I was in a pissy, mean mood. Didn't mean anything by it.

    :(

p.s. just for the record, my kids are sometimes blonde (onlywhen they feel like it, though - right now, there is one out of four, no telling about next week - one year my youngest had green hair) and are all *white,* also (although we do have other members of our family w/varying shades of skin & varying hair textures :D).

This is a gray area, as I would be sort of apprehensive about posting my picture. There are still people who have their thinking embedded in "the past".

    My 2cents.

My condolences for your loss. Everyone you meet is having a struggle. Sometimes we forget that other people are more like us than we see.

No offense taken, and I appreciate your candor.

    Take care,

    Cory
