Why do so many lurk here at Degree Info and do not post?

Facebook is good for what individuals use it for. I personally hate it, and I refuse to open an account ( I use my brothers account occasionally). Degree Info, I must say, is very good for those interested in education in general, or interested in DL, specifically. I love everything DL, in fact, I would attend many DL programs at the same time if I had the ability to do so. There is nothing as fun as learning on my own terms, and then being rewarded (with the degree) at the end. So Degree Info lurkers will not cease to exist because the site rocks when it comes to high ed.

I would suggest upgrading the forum to a more attractive one that provides ability to use avatars. phpBB forum/bulletin boards are nice, and maybe the lurkers would indulge more if the interface is more attractive.

Does anyone want to be my facebook friend?

If so send a CV spelling out your Mafia size and Farmville level and I will consider it.

    I was beginning to wonder.

If my journey is indicative of anything, my metamorphosis went from a vaguely curious onlooker (stumbled upon it in Google) to an interested member to somewhat active member (actually posting a few things) to actually taking classes and cramming for CLEPS and DSST's and now I don't have time to wipe my own butt (after eating face) and so I can only afford to log on when I really need to steal information from you guys. Hopefully someday when I finish everything, my philanthropic side will show and I'll freely spew my wisdom on others (between bites of their face).

We lurk because we either feel intimidated by the peer group on the site, are not interested by the content, or can simply find all of the info we need without the need to bother anyone at all. I am taking a course that touches on the philosophy behind open source projects, and it's pretty cool to apply the concepts therein to these forums.

I do wish we had better smileys...

I don't post much, but I visit every day. This forum was immensely helpful in choosing a program for this Fall.

I guess the reason I don't post much is that I really don't have much experience w/ distance learning! Up until this semester, I had only taken one class online & that was from the school I was regularly attending. At this point, I really don't have a lot of advice to give unlike the majority of you all. I enjoy reading the advice given to others & I learn a lot from that. I contribute when I can, but most of that is simply talking about the degrees I have, why I like school, etc.

Oh, +1 for wanting a nifty avatar by my name! I'd prolly have Willie the Wildcat :).

Go here. Copy the link and use the "Insert Image" function. Use only one set of img brackets. There's even one for Jennifer [IMG]

  8. Will you be my friend? I promise not to eat your face. :D

I look at this forum very often and the forum was very helpful in helping me select my MPA program at UC Denver. I post from time to time but many times that I post, my posts don't appear (I know they have to be moderated first, which is fine) but I mean they don't appear...ever. I am a nice person, a real student and I think I can contribute from time to time but frankly after trying to reply to a couple of posts recently and never seeing my replies show up, I got discouraged.

    A-HA! It's a movement!!! [IMG]

Now some content: I think we've had this discussion before and someone said that part of the reason people post less is that there is already so much searchable content in the forum. There will always be a need for more discussion, but this is not 4chan; there is a limited number of people who are interested in doing serious research on online schools. Many people somehow want an education but are overwhelmed with options or don't care enough to If it were not so, all those semi-scam schools and diploma mills wouldn't make a dime.

Now back to the Smileys... [IMG]

    Hi -

I post off and on I lurk more than I post for the following reasons:
    1. I've noted the same threads with different titles over and over since I've signed up.
    2. I've noted the same programs being mentioned over and over since I've signed up.
    3. I've noted that the same posters are the ones providing info on new programs and I try to follow them instead of offer insight.

One statement I'll make on the above comments:
    1. You do not downgrade a Vbulletin forum to a phpBB forum. You get a UI designer to modify the themes and install usability hacks to the Vbulletin forum.

The reason for this will become evident the first time you try to use phpBB "support". While I'm certain the Vbulletin guys run out of some dude's bedroom, they're very responsive when you have an issue. I'm pretty sure the phpBB guys outsource their support to Indians that then outsource their support to Indian college kids..

Seriously though, Vbulletin.. more robust product.

Writing a good post requires mental energy I haven't been able to spare this past semester. I do visit every day and try to help people who have questions about CLEP and DSST, since I've taken a few of those.

This forum helped me find several good graduate programs. I'm still hoping to learn more about the real-world experience of attending a UK university before I commit myself, though.

It seems that you have 10 posts to your credit. When I checked it turned out that 2 of them were never approved by a Moderator. That's our fault, we've neglected you. But don't be discouraged, just drop one of us a pm and we'll fix whatever needs fixing. Thanks for your contributions.

In addition, the moderation process is very short indeed. Continue to post and it will be over in no time.

Also, just to let everyone know, you can PM us at any time. If you have an immediate problem, note the bottom of the screen where it lists the names of all people who are online at any given time. You can PM any of the Mods who happen to be logged in and we will do what we can on your behalf.

I'm so sorry that your posts are not appearing or appearing very late. That might happen when we get slammed with a whole bunch of posts at once in our moderator queue. If you look back to those threads, you might find that your posts finally do appear but just super late. Probably so late that it was of no use to post. We are all working to make sure that your post make it through the moderator process more quickly. Keep at it and your will soon be done with all of that.

I would. Audience size means absolutely zero to me. Well, all right, I suppose I'd stop posting if I was only talking to myself, but if there's even just one other person who can share info, or answer my questions, or maybe I can answer theirs - that's good enough for me. And I seriously doubt I'm the only one here who feels that way. It's not all about socializing and it's not all about "being heard by a large audience." Sure, some of the stuff here is just "chatting" - like this particular thread - but I would imagine people primarily come here for information, to gain it or share it, and I don't think the number of lurkers, in that case, makes any difference, since they aren't contributing to the conversation anyway.

I lurked for quite a while before I ever posted. I mostly lurked to gain information about online programs I was and am interested in. I started posting because I became more interested in distance education after being in a program for a while and due to reading some of the posts.

With the moderation processes for new posters, I found it frustrating to post early on. That may contribute to the number of lurkers.

I still lurk for the most part because my only personal interest is online or blended graduate degrees in IT/IS/CS/business from RA, not for profit universities with very strong B&M reputations. Since most of the threads are not about those types of programs, I read some of the threads, but don't really have much to contribute to most of them.
