Excelsior College will no longer grant credit to any student enrolling on or after September 1, 2010, for any GRE Subject Test. This decision was approved by the Academic Affairs Council on August 11, 2010.
Should any currently enrolled student wish to use GRE Subject credit, they will need to contact their advisor and have an official GRE transcript sent in by September 1, 2011.

Allowing currently enrolled students (and those who enroll immediately before september 1st) to continue to sit for the GREs through September 2011 seems a very reasonable way of handling the policy change.

I still think it's a mistake, but at least they aren't screwing their current students.

As TMW pointed out in another thread of the same subject, unenrolled students are pretty much beat. Those that were anticipating doing the GRE, or who have even already taken it, but were waiting for the right moment to enroll, just lost out on, potentially, up to 30 credits. Yikes.

About 25 years ago I read an intro psych book and a 150-160 gre review book.Took about a month. Scored in the mid 90s. The economics GRE was basically reading graphs. mid 80's. Didn't bother studying for the Poly-Sci one also mid 80s. They were worth 39 credits back the too. Did all this late teens early 20's so life experience hardly counts though am a voracious reader. Not a mistake in my humble opinion.

A USNY grad from 25 years ago? Wow. You are an O.G. who was ahead of the curve. I wish you would post more often.

It used to be possible to take GREs every Saturday and Sunday afternoon in some locations. I was on an informercial once with a National Guard Sergeant from Arkansas who took and passed three 39-unit GREs and one 6-unit CLEP on the same weekend, and got his degree.

Did the reasoning behind using them change or do folks think it was PR related?

Most who take a subject GRE are graduating seniors who majored in that subject who are competing to get into grad schools in that subject. To the extent that remains true your percentile score in a GRE subject test effectively ranks your subject knowledge against those who majored in it. Get in the 50th percentile in a subject and you haven't demonstrated some knowledge of the subject - You've demonstrated that you know the subject better than half of those planning on majoring in it in grad school.

When I first looked at Regents College they had a table by percentile for how much credit would be accepted. To keep it current all they needed to do was renormalize that table against how many who take the GRE were in fact planning on majoring in it. I knew a fair number of folks who took 2-3 of them trying to get into top-10 grad schools so even then I knew that a normalization factor had to be used.

Unfortunately I know that many people are innumerate so they are incapable of understanding what it means to successfully compete against the pool of students using the test to try to get into a top-10 grad school program. Sigh.

Here is a quote from COSC. It looks like you can get 18 of the 36 concentration credits from the GRE PSyche exam.
"The GRE Subject Test in Psychology can be used as elective credit toward this requirement (18 credits: 15 lower; 3 upper)".
In the catolog, it said you need to be in the 40 percentile to get the maximum credit.
