Over the years I have come across the following medical schools that offer Doctor of Medicine degrees with a distant learning component. Are there any graduates of these schools that have been able to secure licensure in the USA or abroad? Feel free to add to the list, ideally the school should be listed in:

    FAIMER/IMED directory:
    https://imed.faimer.org/

    WHO:
WHO | World directory of medical schools <br>Final updates through December 2007

    or Avicenna directory:
AVICENNA Directory Medicine &ndash; University of Copenhagen

Schools that state they offer basic sciences in part or in entirety through distant learning:

    Oceania University of Medicine:
    Oceania University of Medicine

    Vanuatu College of Medicine:
    vanuatu.med - Home

International University of the Health Sciences
    IUHS - Home

    St Luke School of Medicine:
Welcome to St. Luke School of Medicine - Liberia

    University of Health Sciences Antigua:
    University of Health Sciences Antigua

    Destiny University:
Destiny University School of Medicine & Health Sciences Saint Lucia

It is worth mention that some of these schools are on the Oregon Unapproved List:

Interesting. I wonder how many of these schools are legit. Being listed on a (reputable) international directory is a good start. However, the Vanuatu College of Medicine website looks like a the result of a bad junior high school project. I've seen a few exceptions, but for the most part, if a school has a crappy website, then they either are diploma mills, unaccredited, but marginally legitimate, or DETC accredited (sorry guys, but how many more smiling graduates with cap (and sometimes a gown) do we need to look at?!).

Exhibit A from AJU (I rest my case!) :)

Bah, the cap rental was for a 3 month block, and he figured he'd get use out of it since he paid for it. :p

It looks like a stock photo from an image library, with the cap being photoshopped on.

The Vanuatu website does state it is "enrolling now for 2009". hmmmm

Here is a link to a "consumer advocate" who expresses his opinions about "online medical schools."

Nice article and informative! Certainly, many aspects of the medical sciences can be disseminated through distant learning. Unfortunately, many state licensing requirements have not caught on to this concept. It will take time!

    University of Phoenix?

Wouldn't the University of Phoenix be just the perfect school to try something like this? They have tons of satellite campuses... why not have satellite medical campuses for residents? The purely theoretical courses could be completed online while the hands-on courses and residency could be done at one of the satellites. Whatever you say about it, I think its a brilliant idea.

I don't see a problem with this model.

I just want to clarify that by "purely theoretical" I meant non-hands-on courses. Basically, book work. A poor choice of words, in hindsight.

Haha. I completed my MBA at a DETC school, but I agree that some of their websites just don't make the grade. In my opinion, the Independence University site is unacceptable (embarrassing even).

If you try finding tuition rates, admission standards, program outlines, course descriptions, etc., you won't have much luck. It seems like everything leads back to the "Request Information" form, where you have to enter your name and contact information. There are some hokey graphics on the site as well. The old CCHS site from the 1990s gave more information and looked better.

I also remember FMU (ACICS accredited?) having an even more frustrating site. In addition to the above, they had admissions reps sending private messages while you browsed. I’m not sure if they still do that.

RA schools (especially traditional ones) seem to make all of the necessary info available to site visitors. If online schools (especially DETC schools) want to be taken seriously, they should really start upgrading their websites.

Compare Roger Williams University with Distance Learning Courses, Distance Education Programs - Independence University. Both schools offer DL programs. Based on the websites, which school would you rather spend your time looking into?

Wow, that web site reminds me of the web site of a certain school with fake accreditation. It's a DegreeInfo favorite, and I would like to tell you the name, but I MUSTn't mention it ;)

Dude, the graphic in your sig line looks better than half of the DETC school sites! :D

California Southern University and Columbia Southern University websites are gorgeous and easily navigatable. Everything that a potential student needs to know are clearly provided in the sites. The site for the actual courses are even more impressive, makes Blackboard appear obsolete. IMHO these are the top 2 DETC schools today both in terms of quality (curriculum, faculty, strictness, the use of ProctorU, frequent training seminars , etc.) and affordability.

    book cover

I agree we shouldn't judge a book by its cover but an online school? Yes, first impressions are very important especially for an online school. If the website looks bizarre or inferior than one may infer that the school's education may be as well. Many of these DL medical school's do not make a good website impression! On the other hand, websites that are wonderful may be a wolf in sheeps clothing ie: diploma mill!

There are some old threads here at degreeinfo about online medical schools. There were some promising -- if small and not-terribly-stable -- innovations with online delivery of medical instruction, including one school that was based in, if memory serves, St. Kitts, but had articulation agreements with medical schools in Florida.

You might search our archive and see if you can find those discussions and then look and see if it went anywhere.
