I got up bright and early today to run a bunch of errands. I then decided to go to the ATM and take out $40.00. I withdrew it, but I realized I had not taken the cash! Of course I found this out only after I went to pay my barber! I will not bother with a dispute because it was my fault. The next person after me in the drive-up ATM obviously took it. I only hope it was an unemployed person who got the money.

Has this happened to anyone else? I am angry at myself more than anything. $40.00 won't break me, but it is just the thought of it I guess. I am going to go pump some serious iron at the gym to take out my anger. I should get a damn good workout at least.

As it happens, you have just unwittingly joined columnist Jon Carroll's "Untied Way" -- his annual charitable giving proposal which just ran in yesterday's (Nov. 20) San Francisco Chronicle:

I was at day 2 of a 3 day conference today (Wayne Dyer is the keynote for those of you who know who that is) and the conference is geared toward "spiritual enlightenment and positive thinking". Well, between a break out session and a keynote everyone was changing rooms. The escalator broke and must have slipped off its gear/track or something and moved at a speed that was unthinkable. Bodies were piled up at the bottom of the escalator and I left as paramedics were getting there. Aren't you happy you were not one of those people? All I have to says is, "if you want to forget about your own problems, listen to someone else’s."

    Abner,

You might want to follow up with a claim, because some ATM's if you do not take the money within a certain amount of time , are programmed to draw the money back into the ATM machine. When they balance the ATM they will be able to tell if this happened, as they will be over by $40.

Good thinking. I hadn't thought of that. I have the ATM number, location, time, etc. I will email the bank.

    thanks,

Hi Abner - In my life $40 can be the difference between making the mortgage and not. My suggestion is...laugh it off. In the long run it's the best attitude.

You know what Kizmet? You are absolutely right. I feel silly for making such a huge deal about this. From the moment I woke up yesterday, all these bizzare things happened. In addition to losing the $40.00 samolians, I went to pick up my favorite shirt from the dry cleaners. I had told them very clearly to take 3inches off the length of the shirt. Guess what? They took 3 inches off the sleeves, so know instead of a long sleeve, I have a short sleeve (or a least mid sleeve). At first, that contributed to my foul mood, but then I have known the owners of this dry cleaner for a very long time. They are a nice Vietnamese family, and I have come to really like them. I did not complain, and I will be more clear next time. After several tailoring jobs over the years, this is the only time they messed up. I can go into some more bizzare things that happened, but it would take about 2 more pages of writing. Yesterday was just one of those days. It's kind of funny this morning after a good nights sleep.

Let me close with something though. Especially with the holidays coming up. Some of you mentioned Karma. Well, after having lost the $40.00 yesterday, I got an email about a nice chunk of change (side job) I will be receiving very soon. I thought this money was lost, but it is on its way! Oh yeah baby!!!! :) What goes around comes around, as someone said. I often give people money on the street, but what made me angry yesterday was my forgetfullness, and the fact that I was in a hurry. What if it had been $400.00? Anyway, I can laugh it off this morning. At this point I am not even sure where I am going this. Sometimes, I like to come here and confide with my friends. Thanks to all of you for always listening. I will try to do the same.

    Happy holidays! Vayan con dios.

    Abner :)

At one point, he was, I believe, the most successful self-published author around (although some said that Rex Stout was #1). And I just learned yesterday that Alexander McCall Smith (#1 Ladies Detective Agency) self-published those books originally, although they did not initially sell well.

There was a big escalator accident in St. Louis last month. Is that the one?
