NCU Tuition increase

Where's the logic?

I guess the smart money sits on the sidelines for a while.

 

I know with my employer they paid for my 4-year degree, but rejected paying for my MBA or MS degree. At first I was upset about it and starting thinking, why have them pay for it? For me, once I get my graduate degree I plan to test the waters and see what job offers I get from other companies. If my employer pays for my degree, I would have to commit to two years beyond my degree and they would only pay up to 4,500 per year. I plan to get a loan to pay for my graduate degree and do not plan on sitting tight well other people in the job market are working on building their skills and credentials. Also, by teaching part-time after obtaining the graduate degree will help pay the student loan.

 

Under those circumstances I don't blame you. Personally I don't shrink from taking my employers benefit. I figure I put in 26 years at a high functioning level, I deserve it. And there aren't many strings attached either.

On the other hand economically I don't want to take a flyer which might not pay off. Realistically the only reason I was going for an RA masters was to possibly teach at the local community college. I live in a small town, any other teaching opportunities would mean either traveling over an hour one way or teaching online, where I gather the competition is pretty stiff.

As Siddhartha said, I can sit, I can think and I can wait.

I finished this course a few months ago and it's pretty much a major refresher of all the business-type courses you should have had as an undergrad but either never took them or need the refresher. As a public administration guy (vs. business administration) I wasn't familiar with many of the topics. By concentrated reading and use of the (expensive) courseware, I was able to get through it with a (barely) A. The alternative was originally taking 3 different courses but they consolidated into this one. Business math, statistics, marketing, .... etc.

Not easy (for my background), but doable with reasonable diligence!

 

AMU vs NCU

As it is, AMU is 2/3 the cost of NCU courses. With the NCU increase in January... forget it at the masters/bachelors level. However, since there is no doctoral program at AMU.... not much of a choice.

 

I could not agree more. I am looking at an MBA from TUI because some of the MS-ITM courses are accepted for the MBA program. I am also thinking of USF and Jacksonville State.

 

I have been lucky. My employer paid (with tuition assitance) for my CCU degrees, MS-ITM, and PhD. I got really lucky because my MS was only $6,750 ($750 per course x 9 courses). I had to write a quick blurb on why my PhD will benefit the company. The short version was, "you will have a smarter employee". I paid for my UF program out of pocket which was only $2,400.

 

Bet you paid $1,000.00 per course!

 

Does NCU still offer a law enforcement discount?

 

NCU Military Rates

When I started the doctoral program at NCU in 2008, the military non-TA rate was $315 per unit. Then it was raised to $450 per unit where it is now. The TA rate is still what the military pays - $250 per unit. NCU says it's still a great deal and the $450 is still cheaper than the $560 regular rate. And they'll say it's an even better bargain when the regular rate jumps to $600.

But I'll betcha that the $450 is the next one to jump up... probably to $500. And they'll say it's still cheaper than $600.

I believe the "law enforcement" rate is the same as the military rate. I wish they would "man up" and post all the rates on their web site where they're easy to find. Are they ashamed or embarrassed to do so?

 

I paid $865 for each course as a law enforcement discount, but it has long since been discontinued since they achieved RA status. The current law enforcement rate is pennies on the dollar i.e. big deal. NCU is now charging the same exorbitant prices that all the other online universities are charging, to include Capella, Walden, TUI, et al. Is education about quality AND money? You figure it out.

 

It was $315 in 2008 for veterans? man, that's a pretty heafty increase. They emailed me last week saying the rate for veterans was going to increase to $475 starting January 10th.
