Most expensive DL $$$$ degree list - Does anyone have one (looking for the most costly)??

According to The Chronicle of Higher Education, the most expensive four-year university in the U.S. (and most likely the world) is Washington, D.C.’s George Washington University, with a price tag of $39,240 in 2007-2008. Rounding out the top five: Ohio’s Kenyon College ($38,140), Bucknell University in Pennsylvania ($38,134) and Vassar College ($38,115) and Sarah Lawrence College ($38,090), both in New York.

Vermont’s Landmark College ($41,275 per year), which caters to students with learning disabilities.

The cost of obtaining a U.S. degree is among the highest in the world and rising, which may discourage international students,” says a 2007 report by the U.S. Government Accountability Office. Globally, the average cost of a public education in the U.S. ($4,587) was second only to Australia ($5,289) in 2003-2004, the years surveyed for the study. For private education, the U.S. schools have the highest average price tags.

Is this only DL or does it also include B&M schools?

I have a friend with a Bachelor of Science in Physics from the United States Air Force Academy. I seem to remember his grant/scholarship for attending that particular school being around $500,000 (total), but I may be mistaken.

 

A degree from either of these schools would be the ideal xmas gift for me - anyone willing to sponser me?

Not distance learning (unless you are talking height above the ground) but the National test pilot School will cost you $840,000 to become a test pilot.

Not as expensive as those quoted in prior posts but Full time CalTech tuition is $33,324 per year, but throw in housing, mandatory health insurance, books, meals, etc the yearly estimated cost reaches $49,968.

Haha, I was looking at the prices thinking, that doesn't seem so expensive ... then I realized these were prices PER YEAR. Yikes.

 

I was thinking of UF's DBA (which is on hold) and had an estimated price of $80K or so. I feel like I am shopping in the ghetto

 

No offense intended to George Washington U or its students, I'm sure it's a great school, but ... why is it so expensive? I mean, living in Canada I may just not be aware of its reputation in the 'states, but if someone told me they attended GWU I'd just be kinda like, oh, that's nice. (Same as if I said to someone in the states that I attended the University of Guelph I guess!) So what's the deal?

 

I think you'll find that nearly all top-tier universities in the US are significantly more expensive than schools in Canada or Europe, not just GWU.

 

You need to be a tiny bit careful when talking about costs. Increasingly, colleges are picking up the costs that families cannot afford. Look through this page from Amherst College. It's a great little school in western Massachusetts. It's hugely expensive but if you can get in (meet the admission requirements) they will pay whatever you can not.

Not to be picky, but GW is officially called THE George Washington University, and not just George Washington University.

I know some folks who went there as undergrads the traditional way. I'm not sure I ever would, considering the cost.

 

In the distance learning doctorate level some of the most exspenive I have found include:

Jones International University.................$50,000 DBA
Nova Southeastern University.................$55,000 DBA
Colorado Technical university..................$57,500 DM
Walden University.................................$60,000 PhD
University of Maryland University College...$70,000 PhD
Walsh College.......................................$70,000 DMEL

 

The military academy's in the U.S. are free to the Cadet/Midshipman, and as a matter of fact, they get a monthly stipend while they attend. The hard part is getting into the various academies. They pay back the "free" education with 5 years of active duty service upon graduation.

 

For grad students, GWU isn't actually that bad; at least it is comparable in tuition to the other graduate schools in the DC/VA/MD area. I wouldn't go there for an undergrad degree though!

 

That's interesting. The person I was talking about is not a US citizen, and did not serve in US armed forces after graduating, so I guess that price tag could be specific to international students and/or governments sending them to USAFA and other military schools?

Yes, something like that. I believe it was some sort of a program jointly funded by our government and the US back in the late 90s (I would have to check that), but I'm not sure if anything similar exists today. Anyway, after graduating he served in our military for a while, but was then invited back to US to study at Naval Postgraduate School. After picking up two Master's there he came back here, but soon thereafter quit the military (our leadership ended up deciding we didn't really need "real" air-force, I believe) and went back to US once again for his PhD. He's still there, doing research and writing his dissertation. So I guess US will get its money's worth in the end after all.

Speaking of GWU, I attended there for one semester. I took only one class, it costed me $3,500.00 tuition plus fee. They also added $100.00 voluntary library donation into my bill. When I paid the bill, I asked them why they add it int without my approval. They said in case I wanted to donate. After that semester, I opted out.... I think the most expensive school around the Washington D.C Metropolitan area is Georgetown University. GTU's MBA part-time around $1,700.00 per credit exclude room & board, textbook, fees and etc.

 

That's alot! What program was it? The tuition must be different for the various programs. I was looking at the MSSE degree, and tuition and fees per class was $2600. My girlfriend goes to Johns Hopkins and pays about the same for her MA in communications. Did you go to the DC campus? Or one of the VA campus's?

 

There are a number of slots afforded to various (well-connected) international students at the military academies and various officer training schools. It's supposed to foster international military cooperation and bridge gaps or build relationships between the countries involved. Usually, the cadets or officers involved rise to high government positions back home and might even end up coming back to train in the US throughout their careers.
