    Hi everybody,

I'm a code-monkey (programmer) by trade; I was recently interested in doing a Ph. D., but put off; now I think I might go for an online MBA... Not 100% sure yet, it seems good ones are as expensive as good offline ones :(

I also started a distance-education blog/article-website, but I won't post the link because I might get flagged as a spammer :) it's great having a venue that allows me to learn more about distance education in general.

Hi codemonkey - Welcome to degreeinfo. There are tons of distance learning MBA programs around. I'll be surprised if you can't find one that you like and can afford. As for the link to your blog, I don't mind if you post it in the body of a message but some people put them in their sig lines so they show up in every post. That's more like pure advertising and so is against the TOS.

Take a peek at Jonathan's distance learning listings. It's the best listing of MBA programs that you'll find anywhere.

    Hi Kizmet,

Thanks for the link. My question is this: I understood that the value of a MBA depends entirely on the reputation of the university that serves it up. Therefore, the value is proportional to the cost--since high-reputation institutes would jack up their prices (due to high demand).

Is this not true? Maybe this is specific to the programming/development field?

What are your thoughts on this?

I think there are some high-quality / medium-priced programs. Price, high or low, is something that is defined by the person. If you have unlimited tuition assistance then nothing is high priced, like a $100K Duke MBA. If you are paying out of pocket, a $15K price tag may be too high.

What is your price range? Take a look at this thread if you have not already. Ted posted a state-by-state break down of a lot of programs. Best of luck!

I'm looking for something around $5k-10k per year. I'm in Canada (near Toronto), so not sure how much of that thread applies to me :)

There are some good MBA (and other online) degrees out of Canada.

You could do a search in the degree forum here or perhaps post a message asking for Canadian options from Sentinel, emmzee or RFValve who are all Canadian, I believe.

Or you could get a degree from an accredited well-known US school. Some of the Canadians have said that US State (public) schools are the best bet for Canadians...not sure about that. UWisconsin, UWyoming, UIllinois are all options to look at that would be well known in your area of the country.

    Good luck.
