It looks like AMU is ramping up a program in Public History. Along with various courses listed on the site that aren't open for enrollment yet, I found this on a job board: http://www.higheredjobs.com/faculty/details.cfm?JobCode=175381210 The Department of History and Military Studies invites applications for an assistant professorship in Public History. All applications will be considered, but special attention will be given to those able to offer graduate courses in public history theory, and policy; archives, museums, and historic preservation. Experience in oral and digital (media) history welcome. Preference will be given to those who can also contribute to one or more interdisciplinary programs, which include degrees in History, Military History and Military Studies. Ph.D. and teaching experience preferred, but qualified ABDs will be considered. Faculty members may live and work remotely To apply: please fill out a "Faculty Employment Application" http://www.apus.edu/employment/positions/faculty.htm
I would assume they are. They have courses listed when you look under Course Descriptions, though it doesn't say when they'll be offered. I noticed the same thing right before they started offering education degrees. A bunch of courses showed up, and then shortly thereafter they announced a bunch of new degrees. -Matt
My guess is that they will add another concentration to the MA in History. Looks like lots of applicable public history courses are listed in their catalog.
Another name for museuology or museum studies and related areas. DL courses in this area are offered by the University of Leicester http://www.le.ac.uk/ms/study/study.html and the University of Oklahoma http://www.ou.edu/cls/mals/malsglmus.shtml For a while I worked in a museum and considered pursuing such a degree.
American Public University/American Military University posted their new catalog yesterday with a few new degree options. Masters in Legal Studies - http://www.apus.edu/news-events/news/2009/ma-legal-studies.htm New Pre-reqs for the MBA if you do not have a bachelors in business - http://www.apu.apus.edu/Catalog/10/graduate/degree/master/business/business.htm New concentration in Public History for the Masters in History - (I know some people on the board were waiting for this one) - http://www.apu.apus.edu/Catalog/10/graduate/degree/master/history/history.htm For undergrads I see a new Liberal Arts/General Studies option on the Bachelor level and some courses in Women's Studies that are new - http://www.apu.apus.edu/academic/programs/degree/1397/bachelor-of-arts-in-general-studies Pricing is all still the same! - $250 Undergrad, $275 Grad
I just checked and they finally have some of the PH classes scheduled- 3 of the 6 needed for the concentration will be offered in January, February, and March. 16 week courses. Just wanted to bump this for anyone interested.
I’m trying to be patient with it, since it’s a new degree concentration and I know the instructors had to agree to teach the courses, but it makes me nervous that I’ll get halfway through the concentration and be left hanging for the rest of it with no other courses scheduled, so I may end up switching my concentration to European History if that happens. Figure I can still focus on literature of the French Revolution that way, but the entire reason I signed up for the MA History was the PH concentration. I’m still working with their office on it, so I’ll keep everyone posted. I can take two classes (electives) before I need to make the decision to switch it or keep it PH, so I still have until about April to decide. Hopefully by then the other courses will be scheduled.
I don't think AMU would have rolled this out if they felt they couldn't commit to the program. I doubt you'd be left hanging.
Things that bring history to the public, like archives management, historic preservation, historical editing and publishing, and museum studies.
