CCU transferability

    Hello folks,

After 10 years of false starts and stops, I've resolved to finally finish college and earn my degree. I've tried going the traditional route but I simply cannot find the time nor the money to attend a traditional 4-year college or uni. I am now committed to earning my degree online.

I've done a fair bit of research and I think I have a plan that will work well with my career goals and budget. CCU for my BS in Business then a transfer to CTU for my Masters in either Management: Project Management or MBA: PM emphasis. I think this works well for me because a) CCU has a transfer agreement with CTU, b) CTU is both a RA school as well as recognized by PMI, c) CCU is very affordable, comparable to my local JC.

There is one bit of information that I would like to know, however. Will the credits I earn at CCU transfer to CUNY? They have a new online degree program at their School of Professional Studies. I'd love to earn a BS from CUNY. My thought is to complete about 90 credits at CCU then transfer them to CUNY to complete the degree.

My question is, does anyone know if CUNY recognizes credits earned at CCU? I've tried asking a number of admissions personnel at CUNY if they accept credits from a DETC accredited school and no one seems to know the answer. I'd like to find out before I start at CCU so I don't waste my time applying at CUNY later.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    More questions...

It would help if you would give program links and not entirely use abbreviations. CCU=? CTU=? CUNY we get -it's the only one that is self-explanatory but a link would help. Regarding CUNY and getting an answer, have you tried asking the program chair via email? Phone calling in to a large admissions department sometimes doesn't yield usable results.

Me again's skepticism aside, I think that if you really want/need a degree that is regionally accredited ("RA") versus an NA ("nationally accredited") or DETC accredited degree, then you shouldn't risk going to CCU/DETC school unless you're sure you can live with the outcome.

    CCU = California Coast Uni
    CTU = Colorado Technical Uni
CUNY = City University New York

Not to sure what the skepticism is about? I was under the impression that this was a forum dedicated to distance learning which is what my question was about.

I'm not "that" concerned about NA vs RA as far as it goes. I have little concern that a DETC degree wouldn't be acceptable at the types of firms that I would be looking to apply to (construction management). I'm pretty sure they would be satisfied that my resume included BS/MS and that my professional profile included PMP (project management professional) at the end.

My criteria in selecting an online program are (in order of importance):

1] Flexible scheduling. I'd prefer a program that offers rolling enrollment and the ability to proceed as quickly as I wanted. That means that for the most part I want to avoid programs that adhere to a strict Spring/Summer/Fall semester format. I also want to avoid any cohorted formats.

2] Price. I'm looking for a maximum 150-175 per credit hour for the undergraduate degree and 350 per credit hour for the graduate degree.

3] NA vs RA. If I could find an RA that satisfies 1 and 2 above, great. If not, I'm perfectly fine going with a NA school.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to get enrolled within the next 2 months if possible.

I think you could do some research and find a number of RA universities that can provide you with a reasonably priced education. I am not against NA, but if you are concerned with transferability, then find a regionally accredited school.

I did a quick check of the CUNY web site but could find no info regarding accreditation and transfer credit. CUNY is also not a member of HETA. Schools which are will consider transfer credits regardless of the type of accreditation (RA or NA). Someone else suggested emailing the program chair, and I think that is the best advice you have received so far.

Whenever considering a NA program, always check to make sure it will serve your current and future needs, and it seems like you are going that, which is great.

That being said, there are a number of good inexpensive RA programs out there. I don't have anything against NA. I am currently enrolled in an NA school, but you will have one less handicap by going with an RA school. At least accreditation won't become a transfer issue in the future.

That's what I thought but didn't want to assume.

You are correct in the purpose of the group. Some are just snarky in general when the concept of DETC/Non-RA degrees are discussed. Others are snarky about for-profit. I guess we all have our biases.

It looks like NA would be ok for you, although you may have less options for a RA Masters, which is why it's good that you are checking out CUNY now.

How about APU/AMU www.apus.edu as an option? They are flexible, in your price range and have oodles of classes. I've taken grad-level classes there and they have good customer service, flexible add/drop requirements etc. No cohorts, very few (if any) group projects. They used to be just DETC accredited but are now RA too - dual accreditation.

    Best of luck to you.

If you are in Alabama, Athens State University is inexpensive at $111.00 per credit.

Otherwise check out Northwestern State University Louisiana:

    NSULA NSULA is AACSB accredited.

    Chadron State College
    Peru State college

you can also go to www.geteducated.com and check on business degrees.

After completing these degrees you can complete the Mississippi State University MBA in Project Management.

    MS State MBA-PM

An option to the MBA would be the MS in Project Management at Missouri State.

You will pay dearly for any degree at CTU and will most likely pay more than the MS State degree would cost with far less utility.

CCU is a good option but as others have said - why? They are priced well but there are RA schools that will give you a better bang for your buck. You will not be limited. If you know where you want to get a masters and they accept NA degrees that is fine but what if they change the policy or you change your mind?

I have a BS and MBA from CCU but decided to get an RA BS and MS so I am not limited in options. My wife will probably get a BS from CCU but she is not going to use it to get a job. I just figure - why not.

There are many excellent RA suggestions in this thread. Kudos for all the findings and links.

It seems odd to want to save money by enrolling in a DETC program like CCU -- but then wanting to transfer it to an incredibly expensive RA school like CTU. At any rate, many low cost RA universities have been presented in this thread.

CUNY apears to have two undergraduate on-line degrees (http://online.sps.cuny.edu/program/business.aspx).
My suggestion is to avoid NA credits (and possible hassle in getting them transferred to CUNY or any other RA school).
Instead figure out the requirements then set about earning the credits you would like to transfer at a variety of low tuition schools. When you have sufficient then apply to CUNY.
I would also suggest that you earn credits that also meet the degree requirements of Excelsior College (EC) - then if CUNY does not accept you can then pick up the EC degree.
With an EC degree you can then go on to earn an RA masters degree.

By the way I think you could find a more widely recognized RA masters degree at a lower cost than one from CTU.

I am a graduate of CCU and am currently pursuing my EMSc in Finance with Baruch College, CUNY. Baruch College, CUNY accepts CCU undergraduate degree for their Masters/ MBA programs but i am not sure about the undergraduate credits transferability to their BS program. Btw, Baruch College is the only Senior School which is accredited by AACSB in CUNY.
If you can't transfer your undergraduate credits to their BS program. Complete your BSc in Business in CCU and apply to their Masters program. They will accept CCU undergraduate.
    Hope this helps.

Then one would have to trust that CUNY did not change their credit acceptability requirements in the next few years.

No. Mine is not an online program, but most importantly is the acceptability and transferability from NA to RA. isn't it? Since the TS wants to find out whether CCU BSc degree will be accepted in CUNY.

Yeah. Randell shall have a look at this. The online MSc in Business Management and Leadship is offered by School of Professional Studies, CUNY and not Baruch College, CUNY.
The difference is that SPS is not accredited by AACSB.

oops! my mistake. Thanks for the correction. Still, the online program has some merits.

No worries. You are in the right place. She used to be a shill for Northcentral University, but recently has been goading those who like DETC schools. Not sure why, but you can safely ignore anonymous posters like her.
