I am a Swedish licensed psychologist, with two masters degrees in psychology (M.Sc.+ M.Soc.Sc.). Since we don´t have the professional doctorates in Europe, I´m interested in obtaining the doctors title online from a US University or College. Since I´m already qualified and licensed and practicing in Sweden, I´m just interested in accieving the doctors title as easy as possible. Therefore it is not important to me if the school is accredited by American Psychology Association etc. Does anyone have a suggestion how I can receive the doctors title as easy as possible?

    Hello,

While I wouldn't ordinarily recommend an unaccredited school, in this case I believe the school in question is worth a look.

California Southern University (CSU) offers a PsyD via distance learning. The school is up for U.S. accreditation via DETC (Distance Education Training Council), however, there is no guarantee that they will become accredited. CSU is currently approved by the State of California to operate and graduates from CSU are permitted to become a licensed Psychologist in said state.

I'm not sure what the utility of this degree would be in Sweden. However, if you're just looking for an online PsyD to simply have the degree title, then this might work for you. You will have to work for it though. While unaccredited, CSU is not a degree mill.

    Good luck.

It is my belief that the relatively expensive, unaccredited Psy.D. at Ryokan College, also a school that rose under the now defunct California State Approval system, has a better reputation than the Psy.D. at California Southern University (formerly known as S.C.U.P.S.) Still, the California Southern Psy.D. (and the MA Psychology that leads to M.F.T. licensure) seems like an amazing bargain for the tuition fees being asked. Both schools are not regionally accredited, but are also not astronomically priced either...

Such degrees are not available in Sweden?

Maybe this has been asked before, but is there a potential risk in pursuing an unaccredited (but state-approved) doctoral degree in psychology in California, given the apparent uncertainty caused by the demise of BPPVE ?

It appears that the California Psychology Board is looking into establishing new regulations "to define what degree from an approved school pursuant to Business & Professions Code section 2914(g) would meet the qualifications for licensure", and that such degrees "will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis to determine whether the degree meets the statutory educational requirements."

I believe that there is a great risk in pursuing such a degree, but only for someone who is intending to practice in the U.S. The OP lives and works in Sweden, and only wants a PsyD degree (possibly so (s)he can be called "DOKTOR"), not a license to practice in the U.S.

I think that boasting empty "titles" is unethical, both personally and professionally. If Degreeinfo starts recommending borderline-mills just because they are "easy", then we become complicit. It's a bad idea all around.

You probably should be looking at your doctoral project as an educational opportunity. Don't treat study and research as annoying hurdles to be avoided, but as an enjoyable chance to grow in your profession and to deepen your expertise on some interesting specialty of it.

Do this thing right, don't just blow it off.

I frequently hear people claim (albeit in a different field) that "they have the knowledge already, but just need the credential to top it off." I am always amazed at the breadth of knowledge they must possess to truly have an entire field of study nailed down. Unless someone is a genius the like of Einstein or Chadwick, they'll be able to glean something valuable from a credible doctoral program. Unfortunately, credibility and ease don't commonly go together.

Great picks for online degrees that are accredited regionally and/or nationally.

These should work well for obtaining a title of "Doctor," however, as it has been mentioned before, the whole point of obtaining your doctorate is to take in the educational opportunity along with the prestige.

By no means are these degree programs easy, but considering they are online and your qualification level these should be a relatively easy challenge.

So including Argosy, as Randell suggests, is Northcentral the only North American, regionally-accredited school offering a Psychology Ph.D. with no residencies? Are there any RA Psy.D. degree programs offerered completely online?

You may be right about Northcentral. I was thinking an APA Accreditied PsyD from Argosy in a residental program - guess I was giving an answer without thinking out the question. I had the program on my mind.

I was unaware that their psychology doctorates were offered at a distance.

And why is there an automatic assumption that if somebody wants a degree that is not absolutely required for their job that said individual must be interested in some dodgy mill?

Einstein was not above writing up a thesis and defending it. True, all he had to do is pick the most conventional of his 1905 brilliant papers and add like two lines to it. Still, even his ginormous intellect and ego didn't compel him to claim a fake title - which he did deserve btw. So people using "have knowledge already" exuse are either more arrogant than Einstein (with less reason to be) or are insecure hacks who secretly know they're unworthy and need the title to fight inferiority complex.

'Cause the individual did specify that he wants the title "as easy as possible".

No, in all of Europe we dont have any professional doctorates, only research doctorates like PhD. Therefore, it is incorrect to call a swedish licensed physichian "doctor", since he is not MD. We are all Masters...
