I had hoped to transfer in the full 120 and get a degree in natural science from TESC. These credits would have come from the pool of credits I earned from 1998-2002 while double-majoring in biology and chemical engineering. After joining the military in 2002, I completely started over and earned a BS in business administration through distance learning. It turns out that even though there is no overlap in the credits (except for basic gen. ed. requirements), the credits for the second bachelors at TESC must come after the first degree.

At 212 credits, with 96 being bio and engineering, it looks like I just earned the world's most rigorous business degree...

Maybe you could try COSC with those "extra" credits? :(

Have you physically applied or was this verbal? Also, do you have anything on paper with them?
So, your bachelor's degree is totally separate with absolutely not a single previous credit? Well...let your conscience be your guide- but how do they know about your business degree if you don't tell them?

    2nd BA

Hi, I think you may have spoken to a person unfamiliar with the 2nd BA option through TESC. I would use all the FEMA EMI, USFA 2 credit ( ACE transcript) and move forward from there. I am working slowly on my 2nd BA from TESC. Hille

It was verbally from one of their advisers. There is always the chance that the person was wrong...I will send the updated transcript listing my conferred degree to be sure. I don't want to do anything that can be interpreted as unethical, so I will just wait and see what happens.

Exactly! 27 free FEMA credits done over the weekend and one 3 credit CLEP and you are done. The 30 credits do not have to be in the major.

From the TESC catalog p. 129

The following criteria are for students who have
received one associate degree at Thomas Edison State
College or another regionally accredited institution and
wish to earn a second associate degree, or if they have
received one baccalaureate degree at Thomas Edison
State College or another regionally accredited institution
and wish to earn a second baccalaureate degree:

    1. Students must complete a minimum of 15 additional
credits for a second associate degree and
30 additional credits for a second baccalaureate
degree beyond the date all prior degrees were completed.

    2. Students must select an option which is significantly
    different from their previous degree(s).

    3. Students must complete all requirements for the
degree as listed in the current Thomas Edison
    State College Catalog.

    4. Course work used to fulfill requirements for a
previous associate degree major or any other
    undergraduate, advanced or professional degrees
may not be used to fulfill requirements for the
second associate degree option or a second
baccalaureate degree area of study. The College
will not award a third baccalaureate degree.

Item number 1 is what is giving him the trouble- TESC isn't saying he can't have a second bachelor's degree, only that the credit has to come after his first bachelor's degree. His was prior to.

Agreed. So if he spends next weekend testing out of 27 free FEMA credits, then takes a CLEP exam, he will have met the requirement of earning 30 new credits after the conferral of the first degree. He will have spent one week earning enough credits for the second degree.

ANY new 30 credits earned after the first degree will fulfill the requirement. 27 free FEMA credits + 1 CLEP and he is done.

Question - why care so much as a second bachelors? Take one and move on.

Hey, why not take two (or as many as one wants) before moving on?

    It was just a question.

LOL, not to speak for the OP, but I think he wanted to use his 120 credits that are laying around- not necessarily WORK ON a new degree.

Excellent idea. I want to get the FEMA classes done anyway....now this gives me a reason. Thanks.

Mostly because it gives a better indication of my knowledge. There are also a surprising number of management and operations positions that prefer a science background, even if the actual duties are more closely aligned with a business education.

It is also a lot of credits to just leave sitting around. I was admitted directly to the department, so I started on my science classes and did general education requirements as I went. I fill the "buckets" for the natural science degree at TESC with about 25 science credits to spare.

It also isn't anything I'm losing sleep over. If it works out, great. If it doesn't work out, I'll be busy with a masters anyway.

So if I wanted to get a second degree from TESC. I would just have to complete 27 FEMA credits and what CLEP test? What would your degree be in? Can I do this with a COSC degree?

I don't think this is possible taking 27 FEMA courses and 1 clep test for a second degree. I think you need to complete the concentration courses in order to complete a second degree.

It is possible if you, like the original poster, already have the concentration requirement filled (explained in his original post) and need only an additional 30 credits for the second degree. In the original posters case, any 30 credits will do. I just used the FEMA credits as an example, since they are free and can be knocked off in a long weekend.

Ok, I'd like to call you out on this. Technically, "30 credits" is true- but in what????? FEMA doesn't fill a concentration, and aside from the issue of the second degree needing to be "significantly different" you still have to fill a concentration. All of the concentrations require credit in that concentration. Also, second degrees have to jump outside the FIELD, so if your first degree was from social science, you need to go into business/math/natural science/humanities/professional for example.
Someone show me any possible combination of first and degrees at TESC that
    a) are significantly different
    b) are met through FEMA
    c) actually work
It's not happening- can't be done.

It doesn't matter. We are supposed to be talking about the original poster. He ALREADY HAS the second concentration requirements met. The second concentration is significantly different than the first. He stated all of this in his original post. Given the fact that he already has his second concentration completed, ANY additional 30 credits will fill the TESC requirement.

Right, I already have the natural science concentration met. It would be similar to someone getting a business degree and then going back for a natural science degree - except that I did it backwards.
