Heard of Stamford Hill University?

Hello all,

I am looking to hire a person who claims to have a bachelors and masters degree from Stamford Hill University (CT). I cannot find anything, anywhere on this institution. Perhaps a distance learning program? Perhaps a degree mill? Can you shed some light on this? Thanks. ---Symmetry

There is a town in Connecticut called Stamford but there's no real university by that name.

I was a student at Stamford Hill University, and no (dumbass) it isnt in the USA, try UK, and it isnt around the web because it closed down a few years ago, but my PHD is from there, my MA from M.I.T. (does that exist?)
it is sad when suposedly educated people assume something is a fake because they cant find it on line in 5 mins. of seaching.

when a University closes it dosent mean the cirts. are no longer valid.
so to the first poster here i say, if the person with the SHU degrees is good then hire him/her.

just ask them where they stayed while in school
if they say USA
then kick them out
if they say UK
then you got yourself a real degree holder.

 

I'd ask the applicant about it, and try to get transcripts from the school; not the applicant. However, Kizmet's links don't look too good for the school, and I'm not sure I can trust a post from someone who just joined simply to write here.

We recently had an interview at my company with a person who claimed to have a mechanical engineering degree from West Clayton University. After asking about it here and some research, we found it to be a unaccredited university where one could buy a degree with no classwork; a degree mill. When we asked the applicant about it, he assured us it was a reputable university and promised to have the school send us official transcripts. We never heard from him again.

Lastly, the link Kizmet posted that has someone's transcript from a PhD in IT is interesting. I have never seen a transcript from a potential hire, and I have my own transcripts from 5 different schools, without any contact information for the school. Just a thought...

 

This guy has a Ph.D from Stamford Hill University, but he doesn't list in his resume. However, he lists his incomplete MBA from Devry University. Oh, he has a Ph.D in Information Technology, but his website likes a 10 year-old kid's website. hmmmmm...

wow, as i recall there was no "IT" as a major for PHD when i went there, of course it closed down in 1998, there is another sure seed of info. what year is his degree formalised?

 

oh i checked the link also, and that looks nothing like my own transcrips, also the PHD degree on the site is 100% bS. pisses me off because it drops the name of my past school to a level below what it was... honestly it wasnt much of a school anyway, but it was accredited for a few years.

 

Where was Stamford Hill University when it was open? Do you have an address? Also, what does a former graduate of the university, such as yourself, do when an employer requests sealed transcripts? Are there any alumni groups still active? Who was the dean/program chair of your school when you were there and where does he/she work now?

If you really do have one of their diplomas, you never visited their campus to receive it. It doesn't look like Stamford Hill ever had a campus... anywhere, ever.

Sure, the school exists. I'm less sure about your degree.

What's the degree in? Last I heard, MIT only offers one MA program, in economics. All of the rest of its many masters offerings are MS degrees, or specialized masters degrees like MBAs, MArchs, MEngs and so on. Besides, why would an MIT graduate even want what looks like a bogus doctorate?

Google can give somebody a very good idea whether or not a mystery-university is credible, in just a minute or two.

It's basically a law of nature -- if a university awards PhDs, other universities will take notice. Professional organizations and government agencies will comment. PhDs are research degrees, so there will be indications of research. People will publish things, they will appear at conferences, they will deliver lectures, they will collaborate, they will win grants and awards.

Google Scholar has never heard of Stamford Hill University, so apparently no scholarly authors have used it as their institutional affiliation. Despite the claim that this is a closed doctoral-level British university, no ac.uk webpages refer to it.

For purposes of comparison, Google Scholar and ac.uk websites are starting to take notice of UC Merced, a new California university campus that's still under construction and not fully accredited yet. (It's still a candidate.) My point is that credible universities display internet signatures that are distinctly different from those that aren't.

If an employer is seeking advanced education, and if a Stamford Hill degree is supposed to represent that, then there needs to be some reason to think that 'advanced education' and 'Stamford Hill' actually belong in the same sentence.

And there's an ethical issue as well. If a prospective employee is willing to twist the truth in order to get hired, then what reason is there to think that he or she won't keep right on doing it after being hired?

Where precisely in the United Kingdom was Stamford Hill University located? My impression is that this thing only existed for a while on the internet, one of dozens run by the same organization. An organization that apparently has no connection to the UK at all, beyond a fondness for choosing pseudo-British university names. They were reportedly the ones who were spamming everyone a few years ago about those "prestigious non-accredited universities". One of those wonders appears to have been Stamford Hill.

it was in Stamford Hill UK, Proffesor Stephen L. Reed was my disertation supervisor.
A.Smith Cooper was the dean as i recall.
it was a small campuss, formally a UK government building on lease, now i dont know what it is.

 

check MIT again and its partner schools... come on do some research before you speak.

The word "militrized" appears numerous times. It is unusual to find such a typo in the title and text of a dissertation.

Dr. Gone is identified as "Adam Gone" in most locations, but elsewhere, apparently, as "Adam E. Ireland."

A Google search for his committee member "Philo Drumand" produces zero hits.

The title and some of the text I read bring to mind columnist Herb Caen's wonderful "Khrushchev Award" for wording that seems to have been translated badly from the Ukrainian.

And complete with the "Militrized" typo -- which is unexpected for the U of Missouri -- but it is mostly spelled right in the text of Dr. Kim's dissertation

I can hardly wait to find out how "Dr." Gone will handle this one.
