Some people might say that this is an oxymoron. Is there any explanation/definition of "ethical hacking?"

This reminds me of a TV show that had former house thieves working as consultants to help people secure their homes. I wonder if some "ethical hackers" come up the same way.

It also reminds me of that movie with Leo Dicaprio playing the guy who was able to fake multiple identities as a teenager and steal a whole bunch of money. Now he's a consultant to the FBI. Interesting...

OK, I get it. Thanks for the info. It seems all kinda James Bond and Mission Impossible but maybe that's just because I spend most of my time sitting in a cube. Now that I think of it, they probably do that too. We had a thread recently about forensic computer stuff and I guess that's all connected in a way. I wonder, how much need exists in the real world for such skills. I mean, I know that they use this kind of stuff every week on NCIS but are there actually a lot of people doing this? Do you get a degree like this and then immediately get drafted into the CIA/NSA/FBI/etc.?

It's true... I was reading the list of top 10 hackers and the main difference between the "black hat" and the "white hat" hackers is that the white hatters didn't get caught!

Black Hat Hacker: specialize in unauthorized penetration
Grey/Gray Hat Hacker: sometimes acts legally, in good will, or acts illegally
White Hat Hacker: computer security experts, who specialize in penetration testing, and other testing methodologies

An ethical hacker falls into the category of White Hat Hacker and operate within the law or with appropriate authorization may engage in activities such as social engineering to validate existing security procedures and practices. There is a fine line behind being a white hat hacker and a black hat hacker since their actions are virtually identical but their motives are significantly different.

I got an email from them in days and I just got a phone call last week asking if I liked it. I never even had a chance to look at it!

Same thing I saw. I wondered if it's been removed.

The course outline linked from the provided URL seems to be only for Module 2 of the full course: CEH Training CBT Boot Camp - Certified Ethical Hacker v.6 Product Code:CA-CEH001-DVD.

Has anyone else completed this course? I thought there would be a way to print out a completion certificate but I don't see the option to do so. Anyone?

And what, exactly, is an ethical hacker (as opposed to, I guess, an unethical hacker)?

Well I finished it a few nights ago I just don't see an option to print a certificate. Maybe I'll send them an email today.... :)

Ted, An Ethical Hacker is an edgy way of saying a penetration tester. These guys (white hats) works for corporations and companies testing the security flaws in their networks. So essentially they "hack" these companies networks or attempt to hack them in order to find security vulnerabilities. After "hacking" them they come up with security solutions to fix the holes. :)

Did you hear back from Career Academy regarding a printed/printable certificate yet?

Nope nothing yet. I'm beginning to think there is no certificate. It was a pretty good course though and if the rest of their courses are set up the same way I would consider them at some point. If they would offer an EnCe prep in this format they could make a killing. I know of no one offering and EnCe prep this way.
