I'm taking my last class at UWA for my 51 hour Masters, and here I am buying this idiotic proctoring device. I download all of my essay tests three days before the due date and work on them in such a haphazardly scheduled manner that this device is ridiculous. I have done this for all my 17 classes. I have never had a timed test except for Statistics.

    Ridiculous.

Precisely! As with so many things, the good student is punished and the cheat just changes technique. All my tests are done over three of four days. Nearly all have been open book.

Do you have to use these for undergradaute programs also?

UWA's website says all online students must purchase the remote proctor.

Joddok, looks like we may have had some of the same professors at UWA. A friend of mine, also at UWA, has 2 classes to go to finish her MSCE, and she was told the University will buy back the remote proctor from those students close to finishing (at a reduced rate of course).

    On the go... a lot

I like the intent, but there has to be a better implementation of this concept. From what I have seen, this is a spherical mirror set on a camera, getting a 360 degree view of the envornment.

My biggest problem is that I don't always do my homework at a desk. Sometimes the hotel I am staying at has a rinky-dink desk, and I sprawl everything out on the bed. Additionally, not all schools require every test to be real-time proctored; print the test, and submit online when convenient.

    Hey Jodokk,

How much does this thing cost? Are you still allowed to do open-book tests at UWA with this remote proctor?

I would rather have someone proctor my exams than having this toy sitting next to my computer watching every single move I make. The idea just makes me uncomfortable...

Plus there are zillion other schools that offer online exams without having this toy as a requirement....why stick with UWA?

    Remote Proctor at UWA

Hey you guys. I am also a grad student at UWA, and might even be the one you referenced as e-mailing the Dean about my toddler running around naked! She's really only prone to do that after she gets out of the bath tub, but still, I certainly don't want any of my teachers seeing it!

Myself and a girl I work with at my office, as well as another student have been giving the Dean of Online Programs as much hell as possible about this thing, and I think we should continue. He has told so many people different things, you can tell he doesn't know what he is talking about. Even the webmaster at the school has told people to wait to buy it.

The issues, the software company is a 3rd party and we have to consent to give them access to use our personal information pursuant to federal law (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act)- the University cannot consent for us. However, in Troy's case it is a little bit of a different story since the developer of the software is a professor there. If you go online and read the Act you can see why.

I work in a large lawfirm and at least 5 attorneys, including my husband who is an attorney, have specifically instructed me not to buy it until I have received and had time to review the privacy policy. I have been told by the Dean that my concerns regarding privacy were not even thought of until he got my letter about them, and he said he felt my concerns were valid. During last month I was told that the university attorneys were looking into it and we would be getting a privacy policy.

Has anyone seen a privacy policy at all from the company, Troy or elsewhere? I have even called the company to ask for one and have not received a returned phone call.

They can't make us buy it and I, as well as some others I know, are planning to drive down to the school to take our tests until our questons are answered. I can't afford for some hacker to steal my identity.

I did find the ways to cheat extemely interesting. If you are going to cheat, you are going to cheat. It is ridiculous.

It seems that Troy is wanting to force the implementation of this system and yet not be held liable at the same time.

My prediction, just as soon as this thing becomes well known hackers will have a field day with it just to prove a point. Way too easy to fake an identity for a course to gain access and then work from there.

I just got an email from my UWA professor in my class that starts Monday, (Spring 2 session), and listed with the required textbooks is the required Remote Proctor.

She states that "students who have not complied with the UWA requirement of the Securexam Remote Proctor will not be allowed into the examinations on this course and will earn the score of 0" (real warm and fuzzy there).

Based on my fellow UWA's messages here I am wondering now if I need this or not. By the way, it costs $180.

Paralegal, thanks for the info you posted. I have also just emailed the dean of online programs on these concerns.

I agree with most of the comments made around here and wish you guys good luck in fighting this devilish little thing.

Troy University helped to develop and bankroll the Remote Proctor. We tested a few of the units and were not very impressed. The image quality left something to be desired and the setup was clunky. We determined that there would not be a sufficient cost benefit and that other systems, such as Acxiom's student identity solution and the PupilCity Web Proctoring that AJU uses.

I think this is great. I can take exams whenever I want, at 3 in the morning if it works for me. Also I'm glad that they have this to prevent cheating since half the posts on here are discussing ways to cheat. I do my work honestly while you jokes just cheat and we get the same degree.

For those complaining about your Privacy being invaded you need to get over it. You are on camera in almost every single store, gas station, theme park, restaurant etc in the country.

So in this line of thinking I should just "get over it" and accept it just like every other form of invasion? This line of thinking is why these types of issues still occur. I may be on camera in the public but in my own home and especially on my own computer I expect a different level of privacy than I do walking on a public street. Your argument has many flaws and holes since it's easy to make the distinction between a public place as opposed to your home computer.

Hi, I just applied/registered at UWA for a grad degree in school counseling. I saw that you are going for the same. If you can give me any info or pointers that I might find helpful, please do. I am somewhat nervous that I am undertaking this at a bad time, but I need to get it done. Also, please fill me in on the remote proctor issues. I am also not a fan of using this machine but I assumed all schools were going to this given Troy was about to require it the term after I graduated. Thanks in advance... Brook
