Hi everyone, Sorry if this topic has already been covered before, but I have a question about the best areas to teach in and what degree to earn that would be in demand during our present year. As for my own background, I have a PhD in Theology and World Religions. I already teach online for Liberty University and U of Phoenix in my content areas. I would like to move more into teaching full-time online. I also have a GI Bill that can go towards another degree. So....my question is, in your opinion, what is the next best area to get 18 credit hours in? Can you especially recommend some content areas that might be close to those I already know well with my theology PhD? Thanks for any advice to come this way! PMBrooks
Technology Technology has been a great to me. I managed to get two offers in about six months of searching. The positions do required a certain level of experience however.
Hmmm. I would have guessed that the courses that every undergraduate is required to take would be first. Courses like english or mathematics. The college where I currently teach is never able to find enough english and math teachers.
These are online course, math teachers might be hard to get in rural areas or small cities but they are dime a dozen in large metropolitan areas. A teacher in NY can teach online for a school in Idaho or South Dakota so these areas are not so easy to get for online courses. Areas where working professionals are in demand always have shortage of teachers. If all the accountants are making 100K or plus it makes less sense for them to go for a 2K gig at the UoP or other online for profit school.

In my extensive search for online teaching gigs, I've noticed that accounting and finance seem to always be in high demand. That's why I'm going to start working on the 18 grad credit hours in accounting after I wrap up the CPA exam.
I would also add Economics to that list based on solicitations I have seen and the number of new faculty in these subjects I have mentored recently.
If you target ABCSP-accredited organizations, you'll be able to teach before then. Their rules allow a related Masters plus CPA to qualify for adjunct positions. That lets in ye olde MBA/CPA combinations.
My local CC is always looking for math adjuncts - I just checked and it is currently looking for a part-time adjunct (not DL). I have heard this is true for many So. California CCs. Cal CC requires that the adjunct have a masters in math or applied math (or an equivalent). http://www.collegeofthedesert.edu/fs/dept/hr/Documents/minimum_quals_jan2008.pdf I also hear it is tough trying to teach math to inumerate CC students. (perhaps the problem is not so bad where the student has to pay big bucks or where there are stricter admission requirements)
Excellent information! I didn't know this. Do you know if I would then be able to teach undergrad accounting classes or does it make me more marketable to teach general business classes?
Make sure you pick an area to teach that you actually have interest in as opposed to what area is the easiest to get a teaching job. The students will appreciate it! (and they'll figure it out quickly if you don't care much for the subject.)
