There are Sticky's for several topics including successes. Here is one for all the programs that were started and dropped for whatever reason. Who will be the first to post?

In 2003, I took the first two classes of a Touro MBA. I dropped out of the program due to not liking the class format.

I washed out of UF's MS in Pharmacy Program.

    Class requirements:
Attend two Elluminate live lectures per week(one on Sunday evening and one on Wednesday evening and they are 90 minutes each)
Read about 60 pages in the text per week
Post two discussion questions relevant to the reading per week
Respond to three other students’ questions per week
Watch two video that are posted on the UF E-Learning System (60 minutes each) per week
Answer five homework questions per week. Each response should be a minimum of one paragraph referencing the reading material.
Has a mid term and final exam.
The course is 7 weeks and cost $2,000

    My issue:
I already completed the certificate so I have the UF “name” on my resume.
When I completed the certificate program it was only $800 per course, required a few discussion questions, had a final exam, and end of term paper. Not easy but was completely independent.
The tuition is coming out of pocket since I am using tuition assistance for my PhD.
I am working on a PhD at the same time and want to get it done!
(The big one) My wife said, “What is more important: me or school? I need attention too…you figure it out.” That was the final straw since I work full time, teach online, and am pursuing a PhD.

    Side Note:
Dr. Nanni, Dr. Brushwood, and Nicole (the admin) are top notch and the best group you could hope for to run the program.

    I have dropped out of:

Northcentral University ( I thought it was cool, got an A in the first class..then thought what do I need this for..LOL)

Harrison-Middleton University- I never was comfortable. I never got grades for my classes I attended..I am serious..I still dont have them. I just did not like studying pure history)

Still at AMU's Military History program, but it is on hold for the time being.

    I have dropped out of:

Kaplan University the College for Professional Studies (CPS). Truthfully I transfered into Southwestern College on the advice of Gregg Deselms, the best move I've ever made academically speaking. Kaplan was folding up their CPS into their flagship university, jacking the prices WAY up and the up to then NA posed a problem in Texas for peace officer licenses as good ol' Tejas didn't recognize NA at that time.

St. Joseph's College of Maine's MBA in Leadership. This was a true heartbreaker for me. Due to a policy of the school, they would not allow me to take financial aid as long as my employer was willing to pay for part of my MBA. I'm sure the policy was well meaning but ultimately cost me $1,400 and nothing to show for it. I had planned on attending there for about 2 years before I actually applied so needless to say this really tore me up.

I am looking forward to dropping out of Western New Mexico University. The school is inexpensive, but geared towards undergrads and full time students. Working professionals will find them frustrating and with buggy technology. Additionally my priorities have changed so, I'm out come summer break.

    Great thread!

I dropped out of Harvard University Extension- but since I didn't get all three classes done, technically, I wasn't a degree candidate yet.

In a nutshell, I needed to come up with $10K in a hurry to get a spot in one of my required classes. After REALLY racking my brain for a few weeks, I slapped my forehead (I coulda had a v-8) and decided spending $15K out of pocket for a program I might not get into, and then all the loans I would have to take to finish (another $20K minimum) decided that was a terrible use of my family's limited resources! What the hell was I thinking?

Interestingly, I also decided to change careers. Something I would NEVER have had the courage to do if I hadn't washed out of HES. If I had the money, I assure you I would be plodding along (and loving it) but in this economy, I need hard core marketable skills. The ALM would have earned me a few thousand more per year- I'm instead applying for nursing school- doubling my earning potential with an associate degree- and NO STUDENT LOANS.

Dropped out of Northcentral PhD-MIS (no tuition discount at that time). Reenrolled for the NCU DBA-MIS (reasonable with discount), dropped. Not enthused to complete the degree at NCU. Really examining what I want (it's not a need) a doctorate for and what I want out of a doctorate program which made me decide I would like to take up a residential (or at least some residencies) program in retirement (not far away). In the meantime I'm looking at other degrees of interest.

Here's a shout out to all my fellow washouts! I washed out of the University of London Math program. It's a good program but I need more structure. I work well with deadlines. It helps with my motivation/scheduling, etc. I'm looking hard at Chadron State or maybe University of Illinois-Springfield.

I think we learn from this. There are many ( I am not sure of the exact number) of washouts from Phinished.org. They finally found a home in another subject or school. I think you have to go where you are comfortable. The author of,,Writing Your Dissertation in Fifteen Minutes a Day: A Guide to Starting, Revising, and Finishing Your Doctoral Thesis, Joan Bolker washed out a program too.

I read this book. Sometimes what you want is not what you really need or good at.

I see that your signature says that you are working on a PhD in History and already have an MA. What did you specialize in if you didn't like studying pure history? Was it something more interdisciplinary?

Also, what are you thinking of studying at AMU? Are you thinking of taking a few classes to augment your other degrees or a whole separate program?

My wife is a nurse and she LOVES it. She has her pick of jobs. It's such a wide open career with so many more openings than there are people to fill them. When we moved to Seattle, she interviewed at 4 hospitals and got offers from all 4. If nursing is something you'll enjoy, you'll have no regrets about the career.

I started in the Military Studies program at AMU while I was taking a Civil War course at UH. I am at UH, yes, but I am in limbo. I cannot go into detail, but let us say it is touchy. Yes, the HMU degree was to give me flavor.

Great topic! It's interesting to see what program people have tried, didn't finish, and hear why.

I "washed out" of American Intercontinental University. I took one semester of classes, and then realized for the price of 1.5 years of AIU classes I could complete an entire bachelors degree with a B&M school; SIU, Carbondale. I don't know how the tuition compares now, but when I started in 2003 it was near triple the cost of SIU per semester hour.

If AIU was any cheaper at the time, I might have stayed with them. I had no clue about their accreditation issues at the time, nor could I distinguish between a RA, NA, and an unaccredited school. Now, partly in thanks to this board, I can!

    See My Siggy

    * In academic year 1984-1985, I attempted a Master of Arts in Social Studies with History Emphasis at Western State College of Colorado. I accumulated 27 semester hours with a GPA of slightly less than 3.45 and completed two comprehensive examinations. When the program was placed on phase-out status, I walked away three credits and one comp shy of the degree.

    * In academic yeat 1985-1986, I attempted a Master of Arts in Mediaeval History at the University of Colorado Boulder. I dropped out with a brain tumpr and a 1.94 GPA.

    * In academic year 1993-1994, I attempted a Master of Arts in Biblical Studies at Faith Evangelical Lutheran Seminary. I failed my Hebrew and dropped out with a 1.57 GPA and some rather horrible disagreements with my professors.

    * From 1997 to 2003, I attempted a Master of Arts in Humanities with History Emphasis at California State University Dominguez Hills. I accumuilated 27 semester hours, passed my comprehensive examination, and had my thesis proposal accepted. Under the influence of a wild manic swing, while attempting to write a thesis on armor and weapons of the Trojan War, I simultaneously took two additional classes at Cal State D'Hills and three classes at AMU, racked up a bunch of incompletes which lapsed to F's and washed from both programs simultaneously.

    * From 2000 to 2003, I Master of Arts in Military Studies with concentration in Civil War Studies at American Military University. Having accumulated 18 semester hours, while under the influence of a wild manic swing, I registered for nine credit hours at AMU plus five credit hours and a thesis at Cal State D'Hills and simultaneously washed from both programs.

    * In academic year 2002-2003, I attempted an Associate of Specialized Business in Accounting at Thomson Education Direct (now Penn Foster College). I only finished the first class and then just ignored the rest of it.
