I was just wondering how many folks here had either of these? I did a search, and the last topic I found on Facebook was from 2005. It has greatly improved since then, and it has been opened to people who are not college students.

I have one which I use to stay up to date with old friends and colleagues. I was just curious how many of you all had one?

I am on both as well as LinkedIn and Plaxo. Facebook has gone past MySpace as a site. I found MySpace to be harder to work with.

Jims recent postings about twitter woke me up a bit about these social networking sites. It's not that I never heard of them, I guess it's more that I had some incorrect ideas.

I'm wondering, are there social networking sites that are clearly, deliberately international in flavor? Deliberately international?

I have linked in which i barely use, Myspace which a i barely use and facebook account that i use the most. I like face book because its easier to use, and because i have managed to re-connect with hs friends, even though its been 20+ years since i graduated.

I'm on Facebook, I think myspace has a younger crowd. We need a Distance Learning Forum page for others to become a fan of (but I don't know how to set that up). If you look for me on Facebook, Type in cook derosa as 2 words.

Facebook has people from all over the world on it. I get notes from people I know in Mexico, Brazil and elsewhere. The major reason there are not more is that Facebook needs to work its way into the culture. LinkedIan also has an international contingent.

As best I know, NONE of them were founded with a geocentric approach. The web, by its nature, is international.

Once I get the new alumni list from my school, I'll see if any are there from the 40 something countries my classmates came from.

Regardless of whether or not you "like" these things, they are a fact you will have to deal with in teaching today. Students coming into the systems have been cutting their teeth with these for the past few years and are quite good at it. That and texting.

If you are teaching marketing or ANY international field, to not know about them and be partially versed in their use would be "criminal."

I fully understand the impact and it is a way of life. Hell, when Windows first came out I said, "Who would use that...it's not DOS" Now I have about a dozen computer certs including MCSE and MCSA. I don't like it for personal use. I also don't use texting. I have a company BlackBerry and texting is discouraged. If I had to use the technology I certainly have the technical know-how to do it.

None of the above....my personal life is exposed enough as is, just by using my real name on this board. Whoever knows me and wants to get in contact with me, can do it without MyWaste or Facebook.

Interestingly, the latest thing with police background investigators is they find the social networking pages of their potential recruits, invite them into the office, and tell them to open-up the "private" areas, or else their application is going in the shredder.

You can probably fill-in the rest.....some walk-out, while others are disqualified for the stupid crap they wrote when they thought it was "private".

    Hey Everyone!

If you're interested, I created a DegreeInfo.com Facebook group. Just go to groups and search for it.

Ah, yes, by documenting something (either online or on paper), you thereby provide "testimony" that can later be used against you (in an employment5 interview, in a court of law, etc.).

It's hard to imagine what the current generation will do about this since 99 percent of them use these social networking sites. The best rule of thumb is to be professional online and avoid any unnecessary exposure.

    I don't think so:

    55%

    65%

And these numbers represent teens who have internet access 82%and are allowed to access it. I will grant that some might have access when not supervised by parents but the figure is a long way from 99%. It will be interesting to see where these numbers go in five and ten years.

Nonetheless, your advice is sound. I would only add, don't be stupid and post pictures, especially ones that can be damaging in the future.

I had a myspace up until last year and I was on it everyday but recently I've been finding myself spending more time on Facebook. The interface is cleaner and less sloppy than Myspace. Plus I find more of my friends and coworkers are finding Facebook more professional.

I don't think I heard about that specific instance, but it doesn't surprise me.

A couple of years ago, one of the younger officers out of my station had a MyWaste page, complete with pictures of him posing in uniform, in various stages of undress (nothing nude). Someone found it, printed out all the pictures (in color), and posted them on every bulletin board in the station.

To this day, that officer is still referred to as "MySpace". :D
