Anybody own a Rolex?

I got a Rolex for Christmas last night. My older brother and younger sister also were given Rolex watches previously as a family legacy, I guess you could say.

To be honest, I did not really care about having a Rolex. But since my parents were so insistent, I did not want to hurt their feelings. It is a beautiful watch. It is white gold, and has gloss black dial with diamond markers. It takes me a while to get used to very nice things. I have a tendency to want to overly protect them so they don't get scratched or damaged. When I first got my Mercedes a few years ago, I was tempted to keep my old economy car and just use my new car on the weekends. Then a buddy said "why the hell do you want to do that? That car is like a tank, use it!". I came to realize he was right. Old habits I guess. I sometimes remember the hard times when I was growing up, and often I think I must be dreaming these good times. Strange.

Does anyone here own a Rolex? Do you use it everyday? Do you just use it on special occasions? In honor of my mother and father, I want to take very good care of it. One of these days when I kick the bucket, I will leave it to my nephew in order to pass it on and keep it in the family.

    Take care,

    Abner

I have my dad's old Rolex, and the only reason I don't wear it every day is because I'm afraid it would get lost in a scuffle at work. They're built like a tank and last forever, so I wouldn't be overly concerned with damaging it.

I say enjoy your very thoughtful gift by wearing it, not by having it sit in a box!

I have one and use it almost every day. My wife just got one for Christmas and will be wearing it almost everyday. They are bullet-proof. Just don't lose it!

the only thing you need to do is ensure you get it serviced regularly (5 years). The oil can dry up through use and the small metal particles from the action can leave debris in the mechanism.

    some good info here:

Timezone click on Rolex FAQs to get some background

What a nice gift. Wear it and enjoy.

Hey - Once upon a time a guy offered to sell me a Rolex, or maybe it was a Roulex, or a Roolex. It was hard to tell because he had twelve of them on his arm and he was moving a little too fast to read the fine print. Then a squad car rolled by and then this guy said he saw a friend of his down the street so he said he had to go. That's the closest I ever got to a Rolex.

On a more serious note, I don't own/wear a watch. I use my cell as a timekeeper. (not that I'm envious or anything)

I was curious about the cost of a Rolex, so I looked them up on Craig's List . . . and was fascinated to see wording not all that different from the sellers of fake degrees. For instance:
    -----------------------------------------------
    100 % NEW ROLEX DEEP SEA-DWELLER - $330 (fremont / union city / newark)
    Date: 2008-12-26, 5:07PM PST
Revered as one of the most dynamic time-pieces this century, the deepsea is beautiful and substantial!
-43mm in diameter and 17.5mm thick!
-Stainless steel brushed bracelet with racket-style diver extension
Never before has Rolex made a watch this big and heavy.....
    Please Call 510-688-6198
    --------------------------------------
And then came the 'small type'

Thanks Bruce and everyone that responded. I appreciate all the comments and insight. I actually worked up the courage to take the watch out of the box, and I am going to wear it out for a nice lunch with my wife. Kevin, thanks for the tips on maintenance. The watch place my parents bought my watch from is certified/authorized by Rolex, so they can take care of any maintenance. They also said if I scratched it, they would buff it out and take care of it. I went back so the guy (William) could show me how to wind it, and set the time. I guess they could tell I was nervous.Winding is a little different than a quartz watch, for instance.

One last thing for those that own a Rolex. One of the ladies at the shop told me to wind the watch at least once a week to keep everything properly oiled.

Time to hit the books again,

I would recommend an automatic winder. They are great. Search for Steinhausen on Ebay.

I saw a ton of knock-off Rolex watches in Singapore. I went into a clothing store and this guy asked me if I wanted to look at some Rolex watches. He took me into a back room that had like 20 people in it. This guy locked the door and showed me some nice knock-offs. The guy told me the watches had Rolex frames with Seiko guts.

Prof. Leland Milton Goldblatt, Ph.D. Ed.D. wears the President diamond encrusted Rolex watch. So does my wife, The Reverend Doctor Goldblatt Ph.D.

Abner is wondering why Prof. L.M. Goldblatt always speaks in the third person.

Could it be that Prof. Goldblatt (if he exists) is an attorney?

    Moderator,

This Professor Leland Milton Goldblatt is a shill and a troll. His signature block contains the logos for 8 unaccredited schools and the photo of Orville Redenbacher. What the hell is going on here?

Query this fraud's name in Google and you'll quickly understand as you view the results. His act is reminiscent of one "Isadore Weisberg" at the Google alt.education.distance group. Hate filled and full of crap with phony Hebrew phrases.

Are you suggesting that Toe College isn't a reputable, accredited institution?
