Excellent, Dr. K. You have now joined the elite ranks of those who know that the doctorate is really a certification of endurance :)

All the best and my heartiest congratulations.

My great-grandfather died in January 1955, seven years before I was born. I wish I could be more like him, both in the sense of living the message of his valedictory speech and in the sense of taking up a career teaching history. While I did complete my undergraduate historical studies, I have never worked as an historian, history teacher, history professor, or in any other degree-relevant position. I have struggled mightily with manic-depression for the last two decades and have wasted too much time on disability, and during this time I've started thus far four attempts at a master's in history without finishing any of them (though I do have 81 graduate semester hours of history courses).

Loud and clear, now, Earon. What a pleasant event. I dared hope you might produce your Celtic fiddle for a lively recessional. Such is life.

    Cordially, John

    Ted,

If you're able to locate a copy, I would be interested in reading your great-grandfather's valedictory speech.

Also, have you given any thought to teaching History at a Community College? As I'm sure you're aware, in the CC setting one only needs 18 credits in a specific subject to be qualified to teach. Just a thought. Another suggestion would be to transfer 15 of your history credits to the MSLS through Excelsior.

There are a few possible avenues to locating a copy of John Israel Heiks' 1908 valedictory speech at Smithville (Ohio) High School. First, perhaps it is still in my parents' family history box (well, hopefully, it wasn't one of the many "lost in the move" family history items). Second, before the death of my great-uncle two years ago, I sent him and my still-living great-aunt an email which quoted my great-grandfather's valedictory speech verbatim. Perhaps she copied it off and saved it. I sent it from an old (now-closed) email account of mine, which got closed because my inbox became overfull and I couldn't delete stuff fast enough to keep the old email address open. Someone was once attempting to describe to me a process for re-opening closed email accounts and accessing old emails (though I am too technologically incompetent to understand what I was told); it would be nice if this were possible (as I'm sure I would have saved that email). Third, I suppose one could simply write to Smithville High School. I'll see what I can do.

Well, there is always the "doctor...doctor, doctor...doctor" routine from the movie "Spies like Us". :D

Is that sort of like the "Colonel, Colonel, Colonel" routine that Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie, and Will Travis engaged in in the John Wayne movie The Alamo?
