  1. Hello everyone,
On November 25th/ 2008, after six years of work and study, I defended my PhD dissertation at Tilburg University and received the PhD in social sciences. I have embedded a Youtube video of the graduation below (via URL). After the graduation, Prof. dr. Dian Marie Hosking, my chief advisor, gives an address, in which she mostly roasts me. Enjoy. Note: The volume is low, so you will need to turn up the volume on your computer AND the youtube video sound control.

Congratulations Earon! I think you're the first degreeinfo member to get through Tilburg (at least on the doctoral level). Please tell us a little bit more of your experience.

    Congratulations!

PS - Usually we like to razz master's degree grads about when they're going to start the doctorate. What should we razz the doctoral grads about?

Well, if I ever earn the doctorate, the obvious answer would have to be a second doctorate.

japhy: I love that Coolidge quote. Hopefully, I will be able to dig through my parents' family history box some day and find that 1908 Smithville (Ohio) annual with my great-grandfather's valedictory address (or maybe some other relative has a copy too). It was full of all kinds of historical allusions. My great-grandfather was a high school history teacher at Smithville High School for 47 years, from 1908 to 1955. He started when having a high school diploma was sufficient credential to teach high school and saw entry requirements eventually increased to the bachelor's degree, meanwhile eventually earning his master's degree at Ashland College (now Ashland University).

  16. Earon Kavanagh Receives PhD - Correct URL for Graduation Ceremony

Thanks all for your congratulations. Here is the correct URL. I had to do some further editing work to boost the sound.

To get an overview of the PhD process at Tilburg U look up "Taos/Tilburg PhD" in your browser. At a later point in time I will do a reflection on what the experience has been like. Thanks to John Bear for his recipe for getting acceptance into European research doctorates. The basic approach is to find an academic whose work you like and get to know that work, Then approach that person about the possibility of becoming his/her PhD student. That person then becomes your "promoter" and promotes you to the university. Yes, I will have to update my signature.

Thanks Ted. It sounds like your great-grandfather lived the message contained in this quote. I barely tolerated my 3 years as a student in high school. I can't imagine teaching HS for 47 years. That's amazing!
