I've been told that recently Obama has backed off his campaign promise to increase taxes on people earning over 250K. Is this so?

If yes then it would appear that Obama made promises as a way of playing to the lower/middle classes (not a bad strategy as it turns out) as a way of getting elected. Now, as he's about to start his presidency he's looking just a bit more conservative. You can say whatever you want about hm but I don't think you can say he's stupid. The idea that he's going to try to foist some sort of ultra-liberal agenda on the country is, to me, a bit silly. The President, by himself, has very little means to accomplish such a task. Remember Clinton and the Health Care bill? He was a dem with dem congress and he still couldn't get it done. I do not think that this country can be turned so quickly.

I've never paid all that much attention to politics on this level. It might be fun to track it.

    Without prejudice; Dr. Goldblatt pontificates:

Barack Hussein Obama flip-flopped on his opposition to the bill to legalize the Bush administration's wiretapping program.

Barack Hussein Obama flip-flopped on his promise to abide by the rules of the public campaign finance system.

Does this guy have any principle for which he is willing to stand?

Obama is a spoiled child. Raised by grandparents who told him everyday that he is special, like a spoiled brat, he came to believe his opinion is the most important thing in the world.

So much of Obama screams immaturity. The drugs, the constant whining.

Get ready for more bailouts and more debt.

Here is my blues song about it. http://www.myspace.com/hansondemo

Just got robbed by my bank—now billions more for the big three?
Golden Parachutes, fast jets and union legacy
We’re helping everyone else—who’s gonna be there for me?

I don’t EVEN work at GM; but now I’m paying union dues
Whenever congress meets little guys like me lose
My Rep won’t represent me—those Senators just keep turning the SCREWS!
I got those low down, good for nothin’ –Bail Out Blues

Most politicians couldn’t even run a lemonade stand
But now they want to run all the auto plants in Michigan
They did such a good job with the banks so here we go again

    Repeat Chorus:

    Tag:
My rep won’t represent me—wish he’d walk a mile in my shoes
Cause I got those good for nothin’ Bail Out Blues
Cause I got those good for nothin’ Bail Out Blues

The taxes would only actually change from how they are now for those making over $600K. And frankly you're not broke if you're making over $600K, so I have zero sympathy for you if you make that much but are still complaining about your tax rate. I do have sympathy for those who make little, because an extra $50 here or there is a lot of money for some people.

My effective tax rate is still ~15% (which is fine, 15% is reasonable IMO).

Personally changing the distribution of taxes doesn't bother me at all. I feel like the middle class has had it extra-rough, and the people that need the money would spend it (at least some) on groceries/clothes etc etc and that would give a small boost to the economy. I don't think that a stimulus (like last year) would do much, but someone made the argument that giving extra funding to unemployment would be a good boost (which I don't disagree with).

Or we could just give gay people the right to get married. According to the Congressional Budget Office, it would increase federal tax revenue by at least $9Billion a year. :D

Why are we bailing out clearly failing businesses in a Capitalist systems stupid compnaies should fail?

I want to also not a local investment broker who promised investors a 12% return on their investments and they are putting all the blame on him. I was talking about this with one couple that lost their life savings on why they believed that common sense would have one see that was impossible. I put half the blame on them frankly these sorts of investors bring that on themselves.

My plan would be simple transfer good debts to smaller regional banks and savings and loans that are stable, give them the money to stabilize those and lend money. Then let the losers fail like they should. It will hurt but in the long run the scare may keep companies from being that stupid again.

Automakers should get no help save assure when they do declar bankruptsy assure their expenses through reorganization, let a Federal judge do what must be done by ending the Union benefits to something comaprable to competitors like Honda in the US and let then get leaner and meaner. It worked for many companies like the Airlines reorganizaiton can be a good thing. Then have them repay those operating funds as a low interest loan.

What ought to be done with failing industries is this: We ought to sue the goddamn over-priced and under-worked CEOs who totally rape the company and bail out with multi-million dollar golden parachutes. And sue them into oblivion.

Do you really want to sue these overpriced CEOs who have million dollar offices, private jets, multi-million dollar stock options, and homes the size of New England towns? Nah

They have grounds against them and the Boards of Directors though the law does demand they perform their service in the best interest of the stockholders, one can make a sound case they broke that trust.

As for Obama why is he so much different from Bush he is pissing away billions of dollars, alienating foreign leaders in this case Chavez the legally elected leader of Venezuala and seems to be a huge spending Democrat. And people wonder why I vote for the Libertarian Party they may not win but at least don't lie to people and when they are in office tend to do their duty honorably. I for one see this administration with no fiscal control throwing away billions and much of it on pork.

This government is no better than what we had before, voters are in the main morons.

"As for Obama why is he so much different from Bush he is pissing away billions of dollars, alienating foreign leaders in this case Chavez the legally elected leader of Venezuala and seems to be a huge spending Democrat."

Alienating a power hungry socialist. No way ;) . Actually, chavez is trying to get obama's attention. He does this to gain support from the people. His attention getting skills are infamous and well known in the US and across the world.

" I for one see this administration with no fiscal control throwing away billions and much of it on pork. " I agree. I believe that the democrats should promote a smaller bill that has a direct impact on businesses and consumers. A bill that focuses on tax cuts and other incentives for business development and creation, tax cuts for middle class employees and businesses. With many people out of work, I do support an extension of unemployment benefits. Period. Now I am in support of energy efficiency initiatives, contraceptives, and fine art programs. However, this is not the bill for programs like that.

I agree, but look at the compaines who allow this to happen?!?
But on the flip side, those CEO's have done more more damage to this country economically than the Rosenburgs ever did by leaking Atomic secrets....and people today want to abolish capital punishment....

I think you're right. Corporations that pay CEOs may allow these things to happen. I doubt Obama will do much to stop these bonuses and other perks. I wonder if obama's criticism of CEO pay will be seen as intrusive by libertarians and republicans alike.

Well, corporations that allow their CEOs to totally rape the company and run it into the goddamn ground and then take multi-million dollar golden parachutes on the way out should not be bailed out by the federal government. A CEO who totyally screws up the company should be drop-kicked from the top floor executive suite with no parachute at all!

Here us what irks my Libertarian sensibilities is this. The Federal government picks my pocket and every other tax payer and business, takes that and pools it filtering it through a huge monopoly of red tape then reduces that amount spending on that. Then hands us back in a stupid redistribution system part of our money. Often for services that are zip of their duty as per the Constitution.

As for the Corporate bailouts and the pay bonuses they handed out, the Congress makes the laws they didn't attach any strong to the money now did they. No laws banning said fat bonuses. So why is everyone angry corporations have every right to do that if they are obeying the law and thanks to rushing legislation and spending ,a horrible combination, they didn't think ahead.

The sows are at the trough .... sueiiiiiiiiiiiii! (that is not meant to be funny this government disgusts me sometimes)
