Ouch on the 2013ish date. Is that a Dissertation defense? Last time we spoke (I don't remember if it was on this site or another - this is a different name then I used last year, I can't remember my old one!) I forget if you had said you were done with oral defense or not.

While we are putting projected dates up,

my projected date of comps would be fall of 2010. And I am shooting for 2012 finish date. And then it is off to the "we have no jobs in history" rat race.

 

No firm date on 2013. Maybe December. I know jobs in history are hard to come by. Not expecting much at all. I am happy I have my librarian job. Maybe this too shall pass.

 

Things are humming along at TCU huh? Well, I have a colleague who is hoping (and I mean hoping) to defend is dissertation at UH this April. We shall see. I am going to watch the defense( The public is allowed).

In earnest, 2003...but I have been dealing with things. You know history and departments. One day I will be at liberty to discuss. Let us just say, the HMU doctorat will be before the UH doctorate.

 

Well, you know drama is drama no matter what department you are in, including here! It is going well though, I am currently on track. I miss the librarian gig I had before because now I have no money... stipends are pretty spartan, even at private schools. Oh well...

Yeah we are actually hiring a person this year, but from what I have heard from our grads that are on the market, about 50% of the job searches were canceled this year across the country. Not a good time to be coming out of grad school.

I don't come around here much these days, but used to be a regular participant in this discussion forum.

I thought some folks here who know me from "back in the day" would be interested to know that I successfully defended my University of Pretoria PhD dissertation yesterday morning. I was approved "with distinction," which is a great source of joy, relief, and affirmation for me after 5 1/2 years of work!

 

Congratulations, Cory! You and some others back in those early days were a real source of inspiration to me. Please be sure and share some wisdom here from your journey.

So what does JD stand for? I thought it was Juris Doctor, Juris Doctorate, or what ever twist you put on it.

 

The JD is a fixed length degree (cf. LLB) with no culminating variable length exposition of substantive original research; hence, it is not a doctorate of the university. In other words, you make lawyers the same way you make cookies: it's formulaic.

 

Do would the same hold true that a doctor (MD or DO) is not a doctor?

 

Not be smart aleky, but I'll answer in the form of a question: What is the highest academic degree in the field of medicine?

 

Couldn't the same be said of lawyers? The Doctor of Medicine, the Doctor of Osteopathy, the Doctor of Jurisprudence, etc. I don't see how they all can't be considered Doctors, albeit the profession of law doesn't entertain the title as much. I don't believe a MD or DO needs to do original research to receive their doctorate either, right?

The highest degree in medicine is the PhD in Medicine.

 

The LLM and the JSD are both higher than the JD.

 

The problem is not the use of heraldry in their chosen profession... The problem is that they expect to be paid as doctors and eligible for tenure when teaching outside those disciplines. For example, JDs teaching in a business school; few attempt to be called doctor but often they garner pay as if they are doctorally-prepared.

 

Fascinating! The academic world is still so alien to me. These details about academic hierarchies and academic "rank" and title are pretty interesting...
