    Hello all.

I was wondering just how many of you are able or cofident enough in your DL degrees to land a job or promotion.
    OR
Is accumilating degrees is a hobby for some of you but, you don't intend on really using them? these are some questions that has never been asked that i really would like to know the answer to.

    Thank you.

My thing is to keep your options open and to better have it and do not need it than need it and don't have it. There you have it.

Yeah, but have any of them help you obtain a job???? see that's the name of the game here, unless you are not looking but for a majority of us going to school is for job related reasons.

As a teacher I could earn an additional 2K if I earned a Masters degree. While not a promotion, per se, I did earn the extra 2K after I completed my MSEd through Walden University.

At Walden tuition rates, how many years until your $2K promotion pays for itself?

Well, in my corporate job I was promoted six times in eight years and increased my income quite a bit. Was it all from my "DL Degrees" - no but they did not hurt either. I demonstated how open I was to learn and apply my new knowledge. Oh yeah, and I now make an extra paycheck from teaching online. I could not have done that without a master's degee, which was earned solely online.

Many of my colleagues are enjoying enhanced career opportunities since earning their masters or doctoral degrees online.

My distance studies in a telecom program included a course that was absolutely essential to my landing my current position and hitting the ground running.

The employer is a manufacturer of telecom hardware and software. The pay, benefits, culture, and working conditions are excellent.

I believe my Associates degree helped me get promoted to staff sergeant where I currently work. It wasn't the only thing that got me promoted but truthfully the skills I learned while earning the degree helped a ton and were more valuable than the actual degree itself.

Now I'm up for Lieutenant with an MBA fresh in hand but this time I think I'm going to get passed over for the (new) chief's #1 brown nosed, golden boy, who ironically has the least supervisory experience in our department. As these guys are from the sheriff's department qualifications play a distant second fiddle to whether or not one likes you or not on a personal level. Yet another reason I can wait to tear out of there.

Considering my school reimburses me for 70%, which would be about 7K, that leaves about 3K that I shelled out. So, to answer your question, that would be a year and a half.

I received a raise immediately upon finishing my degree, and recently (about one year after graduation) I accepted a lucrative promotion which I would not have been considered for without my degree.

Lancaster County Public Schools in Lancaster, Virginia. Don't get too excited though... it's NOT as good as it sounds. We're one of the worst paid school divisions in Virginia, something like 107th out of 120.

My profession is in IT, specifically UNIX Systems Adminisitration. On 9/11 I was in my office at the World Financial Center directly across the street from the WTC. We relocated to our DR site in Piscataway, New Jersey. Several months I resigned my position based on my disgust with the attitudes of other employees in the financial firm that I was employed by.

I thought that I would be able to easily find another position in IT but reality soon set in. At that point I had 14 years IT experience yet it took me 32 months to find another position. During those 32 months I collected a bunch of certifications ranging from A+ to Sun Solaris Network Administrator in an effort to keep me as marketable as possible.

After I finally found a position I vowed that I would do all that I could to be both marketable and diversified. I entered into a certificate program at Capella in IT Management to stregthen my management skills. I was noticing that for an IT professional strong business knowledge, the ability to understand business and communicate with business people, was becoming an increasingly valuable asset. Additionally I read several articles that confirmed my observation so I decided to pursue an MBA. I've recently completed my MBA at Bellevue University.

This may have been a long winded reply but to summarize my goal was not to obtain a new position but keep my skillset at a level that keeps me marketable and gives me options. I feel that I have accomplished this and feel much more secure in these uncertain times.
